Hosting during Australian Bushfires

Hosting during Australian Bushfires

Hello, we've offered our spare room for free to people impacted by the bushfires. We've had two requests so far, however both guests have been really vague on how they've been impacted or where they are from. We ask follow up questions but have not been provided with much additional information. In no way do I mean to sound insensitive, or expect people to provide extensive details about such a traumatic event, however we want to make sure the requests for free accommodation are legitimate. What information are others typically receiving and any tips for determining whether the requests are legitimate? Thanks!

If those through Airbnb don't provide you with the information you need to help you feel comfortable that they are genuine, I would decline.

Why not make this king offer through something like the Red Cross who will properly vet people they are helping re-accommodate in this type of crisis @David6496

Thanks for the quick response Helen - much appreciated. I'll try and continue the conversation with the potential guest and then consider accepting or declining. Will also check out other organisations offering hosting.

Hello from across the Tasman Sea in Auckland NZ.

Thoughts are with you all during these challenging times.

Good on you for showing compassion in a time of need.

Be mindful people go through a state of shock with any major disaster so may be vague, it's not necessarily not been genuine but not knowing how to cope or what to say.

It's not unusual for people to not say much at all in such circumstances.

It would be very helpful if perhaps we all work together & establish a template for Abb Hosts & Guests to use for various disasters/ Open Home Program to make the process more user friendly factoring into  account the loss of basic essentials like electricity, internet, landline or mobile, transport & clothing etc.

Thoughts folks?
