Need advice on "airing out" my guest apartment after a guest left!

Hello Airbnb Community!  I am very new at hosting (currently hosting my 2nd guest).  My very first guest (plus husband & 20 yr. old son - that I did not know was also coming) was nice enough, and clean.  BUT - I suspect she uses a highly perfumed laundry detergent plus drier sheets.  Every time they would come and go (share a common stairway to the 2nd floor with us) - the highly perfumed scent would waft in the air, which I still catch drifts of over a week after their departure.  Worst of all is our guest apartment!!!!!  I aired it out for 3 days before next guest arrived, washed everything I could fit in a washer: naturally the mattress cover, sheets, blankets, quilt, & towels - but also shower curtain, futon cover, and throw blanket.  Some items I washed twice and hung on the clothesline.  That bedroom is the only room in our entire house with carpet - but the smell was actually the worst in the living room/kitchen!  There are very nice blinds on all the windows - which I can't wash.  We immediately went out and ordered a leather recliner couch to replace the futon (figuring leather is easy to wipe down & sanitize than washing a fabric futon cover between guests)!  In addition to the smell on the guests which has permeated our house - the smoke/CO alarm went off 3x while they were there (not at night, thank goodness)!  It hasn't happened again since their departure.  Is this smell clinging to the walls?!!!

My next guest has not complained but I am so bummed about this - it used to always smell like fresh air in the guest area!  I do have an InvisiClean Air Purifier which I ran for a bit but it wasn't removing the smell.  At least winter is gone and I can open the windows - but after 3 days that smell was about as strong as when they left.  I would be grateful for any advice!!!

   Sincerely, Susan

@Susan4640  Go to Amazon and get a commercial ozone machine -- less than $100 and they are marvelous for removing those pervasive odors.  We use ours after every guest, and it gets rid of weird cooking smells, wet dog odors and heavy perfumes.   This is the one that we bought -- love it!

Enerzen Ozone Generator 11,000mg Industrial O3 Air Purifier Deodorizer Sterilizer (11,000mg - Black)

Lorna ~ your advice was a godsend!!!  I immediately ordered the ozone machine you recommended.  Waited to use it until I was certain the new leather sofa recliner was arriving the next day - moved the old futon out the door and set the machine for 2 hours.  I'm sure just moving the futon out helped, but the machine definitely made a difference!!!  I thought I'd never get rid of that smell - but it's gone!!!  I really can't thank you enough!
