Spiders in the accomodation

BA6C7DDF-E2C0-40CC-B382-7E9E79B4E180.jpeg

Hi guys, we booked our accomodation in Sunshine Coast, QLD Australia. When we reached the property it has got multiple spiders in the property at all locations. Kitchen, lounge and bed room had 3 spiders. We called the host and he advised if you don’t like you can leave and we will refund as per cancellation policy. We reached out to Airbnb support and Judy advised us to upload pictures and she said she will contact the host and resolve it. I have attached pictures here for your reference. Till now we have not received resolution from Airbnb. Airbnb chat agent Bailo is contacting us via support chat and insisting us to take what they are offering rather than assisting to get full refund. I asked him do you want us to stay with spiders as shown in picture. He does not answer this question all the times.  Need help here guys to sort this. Any assurance will be appreciated. Bailo also confirmed that violation protocols are there but that is between Airbnb and host.

@Viren8 We host in an 1850's extension to  a 1750's house. Spiders, particularly at this time of year, are guaranteed to be in our apartments. We can clean the house one day and the next when guests arrive the little beggars have moved back in. They also have a habit of spinning webs across the front door.

Now the thing about spiders that we have, or the ones in your pictures, is that they are totally harmless and just part of the natural ecosystem in non-hermetically sealed places.

I personally would have gone and cleared out any spiders if a guest complained so I think your host is being a bit pathetic in just invoking their cancellation policy but equally I fear you are making a mountain out of a mole hill as well.

@Mike-And-Jane0 "your host is being a bit pathetic in just invoking their cancellation policy..."

Cancellation/guest gone is better than guest staying and demanding (and getting), a refund from Airbnb after the fact.

No doubt this is not the first spider rodeo for this host, given where they are.

Oh @Viren8 welcome to the world of nature in our homes.

That looks like what we call a Daddy Long Legs in New Zealand and are common across the world.

Nothing to be fearful of, have you not got these little critters where you are from?

Spiders are great as they catch flies and mosquitoes.

Look at the situation positively.

In all honesty, you perhaps are over-reacting to nature which God has gifted us as part of Noah's Ark and the ecological system.

Now if it was a Black widow Spider that would be something I'd let a Host know about but wouldn't ask for a refund.

Next time you venture out, think what these wee creatures are thinking when confronted with a Human Being who are gigantic in comparison. It must be either nerve-wracking, or entertaining!

All the best!

@Viren8  The spiders are harmless and are beneficial to the environment.  You should probably stay in hotels from now on.

@Mark116    I would suggest @Viren8  avoid the Hilton Hotel Magnificent Mile in Chicago during flying spider season.

@Viren8 Good grief. Seriously? What do you do when you happen upon spiders in your own home? Move out? NO home is ever spider free. EVER.

@Viren8  People who are freaked out or fearful or disgusted about wildlife that is endemic to an area outside of their own are people who should never leave the comfort of their own environment.

I live in the tropics where there are tons of insects. While I vacuum and clean the guest space  thoroughly, spiders and ants and other insects can easily find their way in again. Very few spiders are poisonous and they catch and eat other insects and keep the insect population down. They don't fall off the ceiling, so you don't have to be concerned about that. My home is full of house spiders- they go about their business, are not at all interested in me, and I leave them alone.

Your complaint is without merit and the host's attitude is suitable- cancel and leave if you can't handle it. And good luck finding any other place in that area that doesn't also have spiders.

@Viren8

It is the same spider (and even same picture once).

it is put there by Airbnb to test new cancellation policies regarding "Nature related extenuating circumstances".

@Viren8  I had a guest who came down from her room, said there was a spider on the ceiling above the bed, that she has a spider phobia and was afraid it would fall on her. All very matter of fact.

I assured her they don't fall off the ceiling or walls, told her I would remove it, got my vacuum cleaner and sucked it up.

All taken care of, no muss, no fuss, no drama. She stayed another 5 days, with no complaints. No calling Airbnb, no reporting a "violation".

If you are going to behave in a way that puts hosts in a position where Airbnb is going to suspend their listing for a "violation",  just because spiders freak you out, no one will ever want to host you. Next time you'll be reporting them because you saw an ant, or you got a mosquito bite or saw a raccoon in the yard.

@Viren8

It’s best that I don’t comment so I won’t.

But I will offer a suggestion: Don’t EVER attempt to book my listing.
