extra steps to access my account

Why do I have to receive a text message with a 6 digit number to enter before I can get into my Airbnb account. I am using the same computer all the time

IMO it is only needed when accessing the payout section. It is a security feature to protect you from hackers changing the payout settings. in Europe it is even an obligation to have such a two-step verification on a platfom with payment/payout facilities.
