Host asking for passport copies - Budapest

So I'm off to Budapest in a few weeks and the host has just asked me for my passport details. Is this for legal reasons as I'm not keen on just handing out my details.

As you know it's a legal requirement in many European countries for accommodation providers to have to ask for your passport/ID details.

Not sure about Hungary but I am sure Google will be your friend here.

What is more, @Phil103 /CC @Helen3, it is required sometimes by tax authorities.

@Phil103 any host as well as any hotel may ask you to show your ID or passport and take your personal informations . For example in Croatia we have to do it and we have to register all our guests.

If you are incomfortable to send it in advance you can ask your host is it ok if you show him your passport on check in.
