emf safe air bnb homes

Hello, I am sensitive to intense emf radiation sources (cell towers and 'smart' meters).  I attempt to narrow down areas that I will not stay in by consulting antennae search.com and check out how many cell tower/transmitting antennae are in an area I am planning to visit.  However, this has not been safe for me in several airbnb stays.  I would like to see a speciality 'handicap' section of air bnb listings or emf websites with their own listings. I am not as sensitive as many and have been able to handle cell phones and most wireless router and entertainment systems, but trying to sleep in the path of multiple high intensity antennae is not only painful, but harmful to my health (probably to your health too, but you just haven't been overexposed).

@Barbara808, while I am not personally a believer in the dangers of EMF, I am a strong believer in the right of a guest to choose a place to stay based on whatever preference they desire.

I am guessing that there is not yet an "EMF-safe" setting on listings because there are not many guests expressing a desire to select a listing based on the EMF exposure yet. You have made a good start here by raising the issue, as the first battle for these types of things is always awareness. Please do also let AirBnB know that you would like to see this type of information included in the listing descriptions.

I imagine you also know a number of like-minded people, so if you can encourage them to also express their preference, then it raises the chance that AirBnB will do something to address your needs. Let your prospective hosts know that you would enjoy seeing this type of information in their descriptions. The more people that express this need, the most hosts will become aware that there are guests who want to know this. All things like this eventually become part of the mainstream when enough people realize there is money to be made by catering to the group with the need.

Hello,

I would be interested in renting your low EMF / MCS studio in Sedona. Could you please reach out to me when it's ready to be rented? I am searching for that currently.

Thank you for creating this - there are more and more of us canaries who will need these types of homes.

To other hosts who may see this - PLEASE consider making your rentals less toxic with no air fresheners, no scented candles, no added fragrance, no toxic cleaners, no carpet fresheners, no fragranced laundry detergent/dryer sheets, etc. All of our brains and bodies will be thankful in the long-term.

Take care,

Melissa

@Melissa1497  I don't advertise my listing as being EMF-free or hypoallergenic, but I don't use any of those things you mention myself. I don't have allergies or sensitivity in that it makes me feel sick, I just can't stand the smell of those things myself and yes, they are toxic.

Hosts should definitely endeavor to make their rentals fragrance-free.

Hello everybody,

We have an app (like Lawrene mentionned) to detect EMF around you. It's a serious project coming from a research center.

It's only avaiblabe on Android (Apple doesn't let us show those measurements) called ElectroSmart.

We love the idea to have a filter in Airbnb with EMF level and help people to better organize their travels. That's possible with our tool to make measurement and then add it on Airbnb.

We'll be glad to speak with somebody interested in order to understand your needs and then we have to struggle to make it mainstream as Matthew said.

I have an EMF free vacation rental in Sequim! AND I'm looking for a place to advertise my incredible sactuary! Please let me know if you find other ways that I can. Mountain View Solitude is the name of my place, would love to offer you my special place to stay, rest and restore on all levels... sequimretreats dot com is the site.

Hello! Just sent an email with some questions about your place.

Im thrilled to find this discussion. As an emf sensitive person too, finding a place to stay can be a challenge. some many hosts offer everything in the way of electronics, but not usually the reverse. Removing electronics in the bedroom/sleeping area is especially important. Other items to remove include: cordless phones, TVs, and anything with bluetooth,  (remote controls using bluetooth) Nest thermostats, light dimmers, cfl bulbs. (the list can go on). Placing the bed as far away from the smart meter location is also very helpful. Turning off the Wifi particularly at night is lovely. I don’t ever expect to block the outside waves, but clearing the interior space is a definite plus.

I live in Boulder and I have my place EMF remediated. Readings on magnetic AND electric EMF'S are 0.0.

You can find a specialist to remediate your room/ house.   We use Ethernet High Speed (Cable connection, the old fashion way), and we are below the cellphone antennae signal, so we have bad cellphone reception, but we use a phone line, so customers can make phone calls. Currently our place is been rented long term by a Emf sensitive person who is recovering his health in our Sanctuary. This Suite is far from other houses, and far from smart meters. Our bed is all Natural latex mattress, wood base, and we clean with baking soda, vinegar, and natural unscented soaps. We have a switch that turns off all electricity at night for a restful sleep.  My contact is 303-444-4201 if you need to come to Boulder.

Yes, I have committed quite a bit of time and effort researching EMF, and I can definitively say that it’s about actual science and facts that exist regardless of whether or not someone “believes” in it. For anyone who doesn’t experience any EMF sensitivity symptoms in our modern world, consider yourself lucky, but also know that more and more research is coming out showing a whole range of adverse biological effects of EMF exposure that affect all of us who are exposed (including animals and insects) whether or not we actually experience any short-term sensitivity symptoms. So it would be in everyone's best interest to both educate themselves on the topic, and minimize EMF in their environment. This is a long overdue conversation not only on AirBnB, but in general in society, and I’m grateful that it’s finally coming up more and more.

I am so glad to see this conversation. I have stayed in 5 airbnb's the past several months and in each one I have had to go around unplugging routers and checking the emf levels throughout the house. I would LOVE to be able to easily search for a low or no emf accommodation when I am looking for a place to stay. I think there are quite a few very sensitive people out there who feel trapped in their own homes and unable to travel anywhere due to their sensitivities.

Hello, I am remodeling a one bedroom unit in Sedona for one or two people: no smart meters, house remediated for electrical and magnetic pollution, green wave filters, natural materials, organic cleaning and laundry, no scents, no spraying of chemicals outdoors for insects or weeds, etc. I am a naturopath and this is how we live with my family.

Everyone says that I need WIFI. The main hosue is wired, would Ethernet be fine? There is OK cell reception.

I am new to airbnb, how should I advertise?

@France-Marie0 that sounds lovely, are you currently renting it out?

Hello! Are you currently renting the place? I'd love to have more information.

@France-Marie0  While most guests assume these days that there will be Wifi, it's not something written in stone-you just have to be very clear in your listing, as well as in a message to guests when they request to book (I wouldn't use IB if I had this situation, as guests often don't read much in the listing, just look at the photos and the price and IB).

I don't know how ethernet works (am techie-challenged) but I do have cell-based internet at my place. It is metered, so not an unlimited GB situation, but I can buy more GBs as needed. The way mine works is that I have a separate phone with a tethering capability, so when I turn the phone on and open that setting, I or a guest, once given the code, can access the signal either on their phone or a laptop or tablet. Unless someone is actively using it, that phone is turned off, so not emitting any EMF. That phone gets left in my home, where I list a private room, so if I'm out, or gone to bed, the guest can turn it on themselves if they need to get a Wifi signal. You can get an inexpensive phone for this- doesn't matter if it has a crappy camera, or anything else, just as long as it has the Hotspot/tethering feature, which most phones do these days. There are also actual modems available where I live for this cell-based internet, but then the modem would have to be turned off if you didn't want it emitting a signal, which might be more involved than shutting off the phone.

I am very clear in my ad that internet is limited- no Netflix, streaming, uploading large files, or working online all day, but fine for checking email and surfing the net a bit. Also I reinterate when they ask to book. My guests haven't had an issue with it. A few have used a lot of GB, but others hardly any, so it's balanced out.

I have had a guest who is very sensitive to EMF, but she still uses a phone and emails if absolutely necessary, as it's hard to avoid in this day and age. But at least now she knows what that weird feeling in her arms is, that went undiagnosed for years. And I also had a guest who monitors EMF in homes and businesses for a living. He told me even electric light does things to our brains that aren't so great.

As you are going for the full meal deal on EMF-free, I'd advertise as such- make that one of the main selling points, even using it in your listing heading- that way it will attract those who are looking for that and won't make some fuss because they can't watch Netflix or work online all day. And play up in the listing description the fact that you are a naturopath and that your family lives a healthy, natural lifestyle.

And if there are cafes nearby where guests can hook up if they need more Wifi, have a list of places and directions for the guests.

BTW, I wasn't sure what "amenity" option to check for cell-based internet, so at first I just checked the WIFI unlimited, but explained the system in my listing info. I've since changed it to "Pocket Wifi", as a tech-savvy guest told me that would be be the closest match.

I think I should be more clear: When you go put your rental on Airbnb, in which category do you fit your EMF-RF-free, dimmer-free, chemical-free, mold-free, scent-free, WIFI-free, Smart-Meter-free rental? (Ethernet working very well + cell phone reception OK)

How do the people who need such environment can find my rental easy? Which listing do they look into? It's not "Eco-friendly" - it's a lot more specific.

On the other side, when I travel, as a renter, I have had enormous difficulties to find "clean" Airbnb rentals. Which category to look into?  I travel with a gismo that measures EMF,"s and RF's  and have to unplug routers, travel with aluminum roll to insulate smart meters, unplug microwave ovens, and even sometimes sleep without sheets because they used horribly smelling dryer sheets.

So now that I am in a position to offer a rental for people like me - and there are many - I find it difficult to market it because companies such as Airbnb, and other similar, seems to  have no clue about these demands.

And since now most cities have or are in the process of having 5G, all electro-sensitive people, those with allergies, sensitivities, chronic diseases, etc... ( I am a physician)  are going to have more and more difficulties to travel, especially in urban areas.

Thank you for your comments or suggestions. I am new to offering a vacation rental.
