Hosting in Oakland, California, USA

Is anyone familiar with Oakland’s requirements re short-term listings?  My reading of their regulations seems to indicate that Airbnb rentals are not allowed. Is this true?

If yes, why are there all these rental listings on Airbnb?

Thanks, Jean

Hi @Jean523

This would be your best resource regarding short term rentals in Oakland: https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/872

From that help article, it will take you to relevant sites as well.

I hope this helps!

yes just look up Oakland city rules I would be very surprised if they didn't

😉

Thanks Sally -- I have reviewed Oakland's planning & zoning requirements, but unfortunately, they are clear as mud.

What did your local say when you contacted them to check @Jean523

Hi Helen -- Unfortunately, I never heard back from the local and still feel unsure about whether hosting is permissible outside of being a B&B or in certain zoning areas.

Please let me know if you discover anything to clarify this issue.

Thanks much Dave and Deb!  Are you hosts in Oakland?  What I can't seem to understand is that Oakland's zoning rules seem to indicate that one cannot host short-term rentals unless you are in a certain zoning area, or if you have a hotel or B&B.  So, how do other Airbnb hosts get around Oakland's limited short-term rental regulations?  I see quite a few other Airbnb rentals in Oakland that are not hotels or B&Bs.

I want to follow the city's regs, but if I do, I believe I can never host again in Oakland.  It is only recently that I discovered Oakland's very limited regulations on hosting.

Best, Jean

I am also in oakland ca and finding it difficult to figure out the city rules. Is anyone currently an airbnb host in Oakland CA that could shed some light for us?

Thanks
