Add Alipay as a non Chinese citizen

Hello! I am currently living on China and use Alipay a lot. However, when I tried to add it as a payment option(for a booking in China) it didn't work because of the 'national ID' you have to input. I also tried opening the app via alipay since it said 'link alipay to airbnb so you can use it for future payments' but the same thing happened. Is there a possibility to add alipay as a non Chinese citizen?

I'm a host and my guests are having the same issue.... lots of foreigners living in China and using Alipay, but Airbnb gives no explanation about why they receive the message "You cannot pay with this Alipay account" . You'd think they could at least say WHY they can't pay. Is it because they don't have a national ID linked to their account? If so, why does that only seem to affect Airbnb and absolutely nothing else? I use my Alipay to book train tickets, pay for hotels, use Taobao... so what's up with Airbnb?
