Hello @Sue362,
I would contact Airbnb support. If the guest making the reservation will not stay then the reservation is a third party one. The article below outlines their outlook on those.
Can I book on behalf of a friend or family member?
To contact support you can ...
Log in and click on "Help" and then type "contact airbnb" in the "Ask a question ..." box. Then click on the "I want to contact Airbnb" link.
Then click on the "Contact page" link near the end of the page.
You can also type "contact airbnb" in the "Search the community" box on these forum pages where you posted your question. Scroll down a little in the list of suggestions that appears and click on the "Contact Airbnb: A Community Help Guide[UPDATED]" one. That lists phone numbers and ways to contact them via Twitter or Facebook.
Thank you Steve - the nursing student that booked our cottage, canceled this booking... hope the other students get their money back. Other other 3 students still want to stay at our Airbnb.
Tell the guest to call this number and explain it to them.
I don’t cancel paid reservations, that’s not my department. My department is Guest Services.
If they Want to talk about cancellation and refund, there is a separate department for that but I don’t handle that stuff. The fees I’m charged go to hire a “support staff” that have training in this type of situation.
‘You know it’s hard out here for a Host’
Thanks for the number Rene & Zac

ok, this is easy, the person who booked can't come so it become third pary booking and has to be cancelled.
But what if another member of this group wants to cancel? It would be interesting to know how this split-payment would be handled by Airbnb. Because base price is usually for 2 people and then it is small extra fee for every guest after 2.... but split payments are calculated by deviding total amount with the number of people in the group.
It's hard to imagine that ABB did not think about this possibility BEFORE they launched the group split payment........... or isn't it?!?!?!?!?!?! Are my expectations that ABB thinks through new policies before launching too high???? I'm so glad my listing is for a single guest only.
I think the guest should be the one to contact ABB and ask how this should be handled. They are the ones that chose split payment and they are ones where one person in the group wants to back out of the reservation. For the host, it's just a change of a 4 person reservation changing to a 3 person reservation. How each guest handles payment is no business or concern of the host. All ABB has to do is pay the host for a 3 person reservation - hosts have no control over payment methods to start with.
@Jessica-and-Henry0 yes, in theory 🙂 but it could become host' problem if it is last minute booking or cancellation . You know how your calendar is blocked 2 days until the whole group makes their payments.... if they make it.
Probably Airbnb did think about it before lounching this possibility , I am just curious how 🙂
