I am staying in a room in family home for 3 days now and today, Wednesday 11pm and I wanted to go out as there is a good DJ playing in the city centre tonight. When I got down to the door I suddenly did not manage to open the door with the keys provided. I noticed that it was - very likely for safety - locked heavier and probably even using another key/lock as normally during the day. The host are already sleeping and I did not want to wake them up as I will also stay happily at home today. However I want to go out this weekend and I just read on a review that there is a kind of a curfew? In the House Rules there is not written anything about it and they also did not tell me anything.
Now my question is: Is it even possible for the host to deny exit or entry at late hours?

@Marian149 Absolutely not. If it is not a part of the house rules and there was no mention of it beforehand, you have every right to come and go as you please. I would bring up the issue respectfully with the host and ask them how you should enter/exit during the later hours of the weekend.

@Marian149 Also, you seem like a very responsible guest given your reviews. A reasonable host should have no problems with giving you that type of flexibility. This should be their mindset going into the reservation!
@Marian149 this sounds incredibly dangerous! What if there were a fire!? No host should ever lock guests in.
@Marian149 Yes, talk to the host- they can't impose a curfew if this is not mentioned anywhere in their listing. If they don't agree to allow you to come and go as you wish (making very sure to lock the door behind you, of course) contact Airbnb, who will likely contact them to advise that they cannot do this.
Definitely not... I would be nervous staying somewhere without the option to leave. Especially in a case of emergency. In general it is only legal to have not one, but two accessible exits in case of a fire, etc.
If there is no curfew listed especially in the house rules, I am not sure how they would expect someone to know, and it seems from the previous review this has come up as an issue.
Wondering if you had left before the curfew if you would have been locked out for the night?
I would definitely respectfully bring thing up to your host. At the very least, it seems a bit scary to be locked in without any possibility of exit.
I have Been a superhost for a few years- and stayed at an Airbnb for business travel this week.
on my first night I tested the key on the door locked and closed it . It would not function to open at all. The only other way out was a window that only opened bout 6 inches- located behind the queen headboard/platform. I have broken ribs and even if I wanted to try to quezon out I couldn’t! The host did not return my message after 3 attempts- there was no phone number listed for me to call the host. I had no access to food /water- Air Bnb took my call to contact the host- at 1am…. They did not reply to me until 11am the next day!
I’d not hear back until 7:30am from the host.
I am a PTSD survivor and had coping skills to use- but I was in such a panic- with no way out and no assistance and no sleep. It was the most horrible night. When th hot arrived she did not speak English and did not understand me. I showed her the key worked fine until you closed the door… am he tried her key and the same thing happened to her!
Airbnb said they had some formula and only refunded me $16! It was pathetic.
They asked me what I needed- and I asked for the night to be comped and doors repaired immediately.
As a host I have had issues over the seven years of hosting- batteries go out on the door keypad, AC goes out needing a new battery for th thermostat, the power goes out in a storm and I manually reset the modem or router… I usually comp the night or pay for a meal out for the inconvenience.
I am so unbelievably shocked and angry about how air bnb was negligent and the owner never asked me how she could make it up to me.
Am I wrong to expect a refund for the night or for the owner to offer a kind gesture?
Per safety standards this rental lacks a second exit path….violating safety regulations.
I am trying to be a good sport- but if Airbnb doesn’t see the negligence, why have the standards in place?
