Locked myself out of my bedroom in an AirBnB.

I locked myself out of the master bedroom of my AirBnB I am currently staying in. I contacted my host who had the co-host come by and try some keys, but none worked on the door. They told me I have to call and pay for a locksmith on my own so I went ahead and did that and they couldn't have the door opened, and had to re-key the door. I ended up fronting the bill for this, but I was curious as to whether you all think maybe they could help cover the cost because they didn't have a key to their own house.

Edit: there was no key to begin with. I did not lose anything. It was a turn lock.

I'm afraid to say, @Margey0, it's probably down to you as you lost the key. Your host wasn't at fault and the fact they don't have a spare isn't really relevant.

@Margey0 yes they should have more keys but the one they gave you was your responsibility and in the end I believe that you should cover the payment.

There was no key to begin with. It was a turn lock on one side with a key hole on the other. I didn't lose anything, but I did lock myself out.

@Margey0 I never said you lost it 🙂 It was your responsibility to keep it with you.

Keep what with me? There was nothing? No key.

@Margey0 you say there was a key hole on one side and turn lock on the other. Wasn't there a key for the key hole? You said the co-host was trying keys but none worked. Where was your key? How did you lock the door in the first place?

@Margey0  It seems that it is an issue with the lock if I understand what you stated. In that case, the host should be responsible for the cost.

@Alice595 I don't understand, could you explain? 🙂 I personally have one of those doors and there still has to be key. Where was his? Wasn't he given one? He said that the host shoud have spare keys so I guess he was given one.

I now noticed he edited the post, it wasn't worded that ways and it was pretty obvious that he had a key as @Gordon0 and I understood.

I am not a she, but yes, I did try to clarify in my post after seeing the misunderstanding.

@Margey0 I stand corrected, I apologize 🙂 But please let me know how did you use to enter the door from the side with the key hole when closed? I am obviously missing something here. The turn lock must have been on the inside of the bedroom. Was the door never closed unless you were in?

Yes, and no problem!

@Margey0 in that case the host is the one who should provide a key or a new lock.

If the host didn't give you a key to begin with and the host themselves didn't have one then you can probably take it up with Airbnb.  Most likely Airbnb will take the guests side.  Its one of those situations where yes you made the mistake of accidentally locking the door but the host should had a key for the door if there is a key hole.

The host asked me to pay for the locksmith, and I did, but they split it with me. I don't want to sour the relationship, but I do sort of feel as if I shouldn't have had to pay. Would speaking with Airbnb raise any issues since I will still be living here for another good amount of time?
