I recently started hosting and my first (and only) guest is with us long term ( 4 months). We had no idea how to handle things so what I did was think about how I would like things done if I were the guest. I had a quick chat with my guest when she arrived to make sure we are on the same page. What we agreed on is that I will just quickly dust and vaccum the guest room (without touching any of her personal belongings - just going around whatever is there) every 4~5 days and provide clean sheets and pillow cases every 2~3 weeks, because this is how often I usually change my own sheets 🙂 I will wash the towels that she puts in the hamper but she will do her own laundry. My guest does basic cleaning of the bathroom after use, but I scrub the corners and hidden areas once every 3 weeks or so. I think we have managed to find a good balance and I know that I'm lucky to have such a great guest from the start, but doing a quick scan of the guest bedroom and bath is a way for me to keep an eye on that part of the house without feeling like I need to pick up after my guest like a maid, while not invading her privacy. Think about what you are comfortable doing for your guest and also don't be shy about asking your guest if they would be okay with what you are planning. If you are not on the same page, you can talk about it and find a compromise, then next time you host, you can set certain ground rules from the start based on your experience. I was honest with my guest and told her that I was new to hosting and wasn't exactly sure on what to do and what she expected. She was also a first time guest and wasn't sure what to expect. I think the key is to communicate. Good luck~ and happy hosting!

I am a little bit late to the game, but I just wanted to add my two cents regarding this.

There is an additional benefit for you to go in regularly (1x/week, or whatever you agree on) to clean/change outt linens. It serves as a way for you to be able to check the overall condition of your place fairly regularly.  If food is left out (which may attract bugs), or the faucet is left dripping, you will be able to catch those problems much more efficiently (and gently communicate with oyur guest about them) than if you didn't see the place at all for 2-3 (6?!?) months.

I would recommend it just to set my mind at ease.
