Airbnb Insurance Gaps Can Spell Trouble for California Homeowners (12/31/15)
Airbnb is projecting over one million people will ring in the New Year in an Airbnb, but insurance gaps may take the joy out of New Year’s celebrations, if something goes wrong, California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones warns.
Although Airbnb provides $1 million in host liability coverage, many hosts don’t know their homeowner or renter insurance policy may not provide coverage should New Year’s festivities take a turn for the worse and it’s important to make sure the home sharing company provides adequate insurance coverage and protection in the event of a loss.
A number of locations in California are popular destinations for travelers this year including the Palm Springs area as well as the East Bay, Los Angeles, Tahoe and San Francisco. As Californians ready their homes and pack their bags in anticipation of the New Year, Jones is urging both hosts and guests to make an early New Year’s resolution to avoid possible liability and financial disaster by educating themselves about the insurance available through home sharing sites such as Airbnb and taking steps to close any potential insurance gaps.
“The best decisions are informed ones,” said Jones. “Knowing if you have appropriate insurance and understanding your coverage before something happens is the first step in protecting yourself from a potentially devastating loss.”
The rapid development of technology and sharing economy opportunities present a number of challenges, as traditional property and casualty insurance policies may not provide coverage when something goes wrong and property is damaged or someone gets injured. The following tips will help make sure you are protected.
What to do ?
California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones offers these insurance tips for hosts and guests:
Hi @Anonymous, thanks for your post. I'm in California and this has been on my mind for a while. Will check into it afer New Year. Fortunately for me my NYE guests won't be partying since they are traveling to the Rose Bowl (they are Stanford grads) early in the morning. It's a 4 hour drive to Pasaden from here. 😉
What companies in California will sell a rider for Airbnb hosts? Liberty Mutual told me no; Geico also said no. Has anyone had any luck with an insurance company to sell a host policy to supplement $1M Airbnb liability policy?
@Quinn-Martin0 I obtained STR rental insurance through Farmers Insurance who got it through Foremost, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was surprisingly inexpensive.
FYI, Farmers told me no, as it has to be a non-owner-occupied unit. Only stand-alone units.
Hey there Quinn,
If you haven't been able to obtain insurance yet, I can still help you out at my agency in Los Angeles. Whether you're renting out rooms, or the entire place... Surprisingly cheap, without losing your personal liability or personal injury either... We can also replace umbrella's, that will cover the same thing STR's... Literally no gaps at all in coverage and practically no difference in premium.
Since you're in CA, I can definitely help out! Just thought I'd send it your way if you hadn't any luck yet reaching an agent that has the products yet.
Feel free to reach me anytime!
My agency is, Broadway Insurance Services, In Los Angeles! We're hard to miss.
