Hy,

in my country host doesn`t need a copy but we need the passport information to report guests. I always feel stupid when I ask but, that`s law.

Yes, @Fatima59, they have that right. Very often it is required for tax/safety purposes.

Yes, but it's pretty meaningless in all but the most severe cases - make sure it's clear upfront in your  booking conditions. Also consider  people who do not have a passport - what do you expect them to give you?

In Spain and Italy it is mandatory to report every guest to the relevant authorities, so they would need a copy or take the details. Just like in a hotel.
