Recently we hosted a guest who left our flat in a really disgusting tip. On top of not washing up and leaving trash all over, the guest spilled things and stepped on them, grinding them into the floor to stain, left tissues and toilet paper with bodily fluids on them, wrote words on our windows and ruined linens. They also left what looked like cocaine on our bathroom floor and we found a joint (and a receipt that they had stayed at an Aibnb in Amsterdam prior to stopping here, so pretty sure it was marijuana) and ashes as well.
When we contacted Airbnb we were told to file a claim and dispose of the drugs because they weren't "hard drugs". We waited about a week and a half- Airbnb had trouble getting in touch with the guests- and finally they came back to us saying the guest refused to pay but that Airbnb would pay us as the photos we submitted showed the damage done.
As if that isn't worrying enough, given that damages could have been far more significant and Airbnb could at another time find in favor of a guest if the guest doesn't confess, our guest left us a scathing 1* review. During their stay, before any of this happened, we checked in with the guests and they had only nice things to say. Once this complaint was filed and Airbnb was in touch, we received a very malicious review. I contacted Airbnb with photos (which are taken before every guest's stay so we can make sure that we have before photos in case something like this happens) and screenshots of the messages where the guests had said everything was good, and yet they won't take this down. This was the different between us becoming superhosts and not this year, too 😕
I'm shocked that Airbnb will allow a review to be posted when it is clearly done out of spite! It is really upsetting that our superhost status was ruined by a malicious person who came to our house, ruined our things and then got away with lying about their stay publically.
Has anyone had similar experiences? Do you still find it worthwhile to host with Airbnb knowing this is a possibility?
