Guests on a reservation of 4 left today. I went in to clean and it looked like they had had a food fight with potato chips. They were literally spread everywhere from one end of the apartment to the other. My 4 year old granddaughter and 8 year old grandson eat cleaner that that!
That apartment usually takes me 45 minutes to turn over.
Today it took an hour longer because I had to move every piece of furniture to get at it and vaccum it up and I had to break down the pull out bed and vacuum that completely as well.
I haven't left any feedback yet, since I a little too irked at the moment and wanted to get some feedback from other hosts first.
Any advice?
I wouldn’t worry about that as much is that they tore up or destroyed anything, some guest or just not as neat as others
Hi I wouldn’t worry about it either. Just think it could’ve been worse. Potato chips are not dirty. Look at it that way.
Leave them a "thumbs down" and a rating of one star. I hope they never come my way!
Only 1 of the 17 guests I have hosted so far left the room a pig sty (and same, my grandkids would never be so disrespectful either in their own home or others), all the rest left it amazingly immaculate. So it balanced out.
I completely vacuum the space between guests anyway, even the underside of the bed, the curtains, and behind and under all the furniture, which is minimal ( it is just a single room for 1 guest with private bath), since I live in the tropics and have to make sure no insects have decided to take up residence in the last few days. Takes me about an hour and a half, and as this is not my main source of income, I allow myself a one day window between bookings to clean.
If their stay was otherwise amenable to you, no actual damage or other hassles, I'd be inclined to mention in private feedback to the guest how the potato chip fight impacted your cleaning time, which was stressful, as you had other guests arriving that day, as well as being very disrespectful to the space they were rented and leave it at that. And a low star for cleanliness.
It's hard to host if you let the minor stuff upset you. Guests constantly put things back in the kitchen in an entirely different place than where they found them, for instance. Or leave their food supplies out on the counter, which upsets my "artistic aesthetics" bent, when I've shown them where those kinds of things are stored, out of sight. I have nice matching towel sets for my guests and ask that they provide their own beach towels, yet my last guest took one of mine on a boating excursion and came back with a totally different towel "Oh, sorry, I just grabbed a green one, must have grabbed someone else's".
I've really had to work on my control freak nature and desire for things to be "just so", as I soon realized if I wanted to be in this business, I'd be continually stressed out if I didn't relax a bit.
Interesting, I assumed Canadians would call them Crisps.
Nope, They're chips, even in Victoria, the "British City".
I’ve got to disagree. Potato chips do not throw themselves. Did these guests have access to a vacuum or broom? For sure rate them low on cleanliness bc that is below standard.
I once wrote a review that said something like “nice guests who followed rules, were quiet and pleasant and other than a sprinkle donut that met an unfortunate demise were fairly tidy”
many hosts may not care in the least but for those of us who expect to be treated like these guests are visiting someone’s actual home then a guest not caring that they left a collection of greasy messy crumbs behind is worth noting.
There is a broom and dustpan which is visible and in the open. You can't miss it. It wasn't touched. Oh, and the first night, they were NOT all that quiet. They came in quite late after partying (I assume) and were rather loud about it, VERY loud on the stairs and doors slamming, VERY LOUD converstaion so that I could hear it in my bedroom (Which is the first time I have ever hear ANYTHING from that apartment in my bedrom). I let it go because they did settle down within the hour and it didn't happen the second night. I can only assume that the bag of chips was assulted on the first night, due to the level of noise.
@Michelle-and-Ray0 Well then it sounds like you have plenty to write a review for.
Mine would probably be something like guests were noisier and messier than most. Perhaps they would be more comfortable in hotels vs shared homes for future stays.
@Michelle-and-Ray0 advice: get a roomba vacuum. It gets under almost EVERYTHING. I didn’t think a robot vacuum could be any good but I’m converted. I have one at my house & one at my listing. It vacuums while I tidy other things. Wonderful!!
I own a roomba, but never use it for the apartments. It would have done no good anyway, since every piece of furniture did need to be moved because it would have never fit under the furniture.
@Michelle-and-Ray0 I would request money for extra cleaning anyway, beside thumbs down and low ratings.
I still have not reviewed. I did send this message just now, though. I'll wait and see what he says.
I'm glad you had a great weekend. I am wondering however, about the potato chips throughout the apartment. It necessitated an extra hour of cleaning, since every piece of furniture had to be moved to clean it up and the pullout had to be broken down and vacuumed thoroughly. It was under the bed, under the night stands, under and behind the couch, under the table, and underneath all the heat registers, as well as strewn about the main room. Did you have a food fight? I'm disappointed that no effort was made to sweep it up, since we do provide a broom and dust pan for this purpose.
He just replied:
Hi Michelle. I was told by one of my friends that he had tried to sweep up his mess of the chips. I was in bed at whatever point this happened at. I will ask them. I am sorry on their behalf.
I replied:
The broom was definitely not used. and there were chips all over the floor in the main room. Did you not notice when you left? White chips on a dark floor....
Him: He assured me he used the swiffer. And no I did not notice.
Me:The swiffer didn't even have a cloth on it. And it was the first thing I noticed when I walked in. Again, it took an extra hour to clean up the mess. When I'm prepping for another guest to come in, there is a limited time to get things done, and this made it much harder to be done on time.
