Hi Folks, i would like to share my day with you all, i will not express my feelings regarding what has occurred but leave it to you all to make your own minds up how you would feel and react to the following situation:
Tomorrow at 1100 UK time I was scheduled to have an AIRBNB PLUS photo shot and home visit. In preparation for this event and to ensure that the listing in question was looking at its absolute best my company carried out the following actions:
1. Calendar blocked for day of shot so no guests would be present IAW AIRBNB PLUS instructions.
2. Cleaners gave listing a deep clean and spent in excess of three hours on extra polishing etc.
3. Florist delivered two floral displays to ensure the correct ambience was achieved.
4. Gardeners planted out of season plants to give best season appearance.
5. I shouted at lots of people (which i never do) to ensure the work was completed on time and to the correct standard.
THEN AT 1409 TODAY LESS THAN 21 HOURS BEFORE THE SHOT AND VISIT WAS MENT TO TAKE PLACE a person from an AIRBNB PLUS partner company phoned my office and cancelled to whole thing with no valid explanation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OVER TO YOU FOLKS HOW WOULD YOU FEEL!!!!!!!!!
Regards Shaun
Hi @Shaun69,
Back in February, during the announcement of the Plus Program. I was initially very enthusiastic too.
But after hearing all the stories here. I’m absolutely not that sure anymore.
Your experience is unfortunately just another negative experience with the Plus Program.
I will wait and see, what our competitors will do. Once Plus becomes available in ‘our’ town.
This far, I’ve only seen 1 single happy host on the Plus program. The rest was all negative.
On the other side: Most threads here are about negative things. And hosts that are generally somewhat happy about the program, do unfortunately hardly post here 😞
I suppose it slowly becomes visible what Airbnb has in mind to achieve with the Plus Program.
Which is unfortunately not really in the best interests of the hosts.
Bye-bye: Unique experience.
Hi Cor,
Am interested in your comment that the Plus program "is unfortunately not really in the bests interests of hosts'. We have ben invited to apply for Plus rating and photography is scheduled for next week. Am mildly optimistic that it will have a positive impact on our listing and bookings. What do you suggest we should be wary off, apart from the Plus partners? Chris
Hi @Chris158,
What I meant was: What does Airbnb have in mind with Plus?
They want to create a standard global brand, which means the same standard everywhere.
Whether you are in Toronto, LA, Barcelona, Sydney, London or wherever Plus is available.
Same way of presentation, same amenities, etc.
Almost like a global hotel with literally rooms everywhere.
The only main difference is, when you step outside the door.
As they are trying to reach the more traditional travelers. Whom still prefer a hotel over an Airbnb.
Because baseline, there are still certain distinctive differences between a hotel and an Airbnb.
Although Airbnb is more or less about the same everywhere. Each Airbnb host does have its own unique style of hosting. On basis of their personality, culture, what’s on offer and what works best for them.
When you are on Plus, you will lose a significant amount of control on your listing. And you will no longer be the unique experience, you used to be (you do become 13 in a dozen).
1 of the things, I’ve seen with Plus, is the almost complete lack of text in the listing.
I can only imagine, they have chosen to do so. Because otherwise they had to hire an army of text writers/editors.
With only a few lines of poetic text in the listing left. This will make the host and/or the listing more vulnerable.
Each current listing has its own unique 1-3 unique selling points (which can be just anything). And accompanying text and presentation is part of that.
Therefore, booking an Airbnb tends to be more communication-intensive than a hotel.
When booking a hotel: You book it and you just show up at the reception desk - at more or less any moment on your arrival date - as you desire. With Plus you are forced in that model too.
Hardly any upfront communication? I prefer good communication upfront. So, both the guest and the host know what to expect (I’m a ‘remote host’, you see).
I’ve read stories here – on Plus, but also in other internet communities: about bookings going down and lowering prices. But also the opposite.
Only time will tell, what Plus will bring in the end.
Also do realize, Airbnb is taking a huge risk with this program! Their reputation is at stake here.
When the program was announced, they ‘promised’ to have 75.000 properties on the program by the end of the year.
Wall Street is keeping an eye on them too. And 1 thing they don't like is non-delivery of promises.
Oh, and 1 more thing: What about the photos in a year from now?
I.e.: When you want to change an item in your listing (replacing the couch, the curtains, the coffee table, and so on).
Will they repeat the onboarding exercise – for free? Don’t think so.
Can you anyhow change something after the photoshoot?
Many thanks Cor for your comprehensive response. Definitely food for thought between now and the Plusv shoot date.
@Cor3 Hi Cor, Just like you we had an open mind regarding the PLUS programme but when a company lets me down so badly I do not give them a second chance. The AIRBNB PLUS partner company in question is both unprofessional and (well I wont say what). As i said we have now opted out!!!!!!!
Regards Shaun.

@Shaun0 I am very sorry to learn how it is easy for Airbnb to cancel such an appointment! I bet that if a host would cancel such an appointment he or she would probably be penalized.Let us know when they will call you again and thank you for sharing your experience about Airbnb Plus.
From the outset, I viewed Airbnb Plus as a very confusing 'marketing gimmick', which is totally cool in my book really; I do not fault Airbnb for trying different angles. However...
I rather spend my energy on working on my own marketing 'gimmick', like improving my place which in the long run is guaranteed to bring me better results.
Hey @Cor0.
Yes, I was holding out for Airbnb Beyond forever, so finally ran out of ptience and went 'there' myself; cool place, do your thing and don't get Airbnb too involved in anything you do.
Having just opted out of the ABB Plus program after photography was completed, I'm totally in agreement with you Fred. I have no problems with the ABB desire to improve the quality of homes and listing design. But I have two issues with ABB Plus. Their notoriously indifferent & delayed response to host queries and a fundamental lack of marketing smarts that can delete key points of difference in favour of a vogue like magazine layout. I am still waiting on a response from them re the use of a unique night photo that ( we shot) and dramatically illustrates both location and the spectacular view. Not being shot by one of their nominated photographers we would have been obliged to delete it from our listing. It is our cover photo and proves extremely successful in attracting enquiry. - and ABB Plus want to delete it in favour of a forgetable day shot buried at the back of the listing intro -- really!! I've been in the advertising marketing business for over 30 years and I'm not going to have a no doubt competent
copy writer come graphic designer tell me what is or isn't our USP, point of difference whatever.
ABB Plus appears to be an oufit that ABB have out sourced the Plus program to, at their peril. They have an indifferent set of values. I'm still getting updates on my unique photo query from my Case Manager Cherry ( bless her) at ABB promising a response.and stating they are still chasing a response from the Plus team. Frankly I've more to do with my time than waste it on waiting for ABB Plus. More a Minus in my experience.
@Fred13 Hi Fred, To be honest what has pissed me off the most is that an AIRBNB PLUS partner company can get away with this without any repercussions regarding their business. If a photographic company played this trick in my area of UK they would not work again in the area. AIRBNB PLUS do not give a host a choice of photographic company it is dictated, so I cannot as a business owner check out the company and make an informed choice on wether to use them. Also please remember that they confirmed the booking and laid down a number of conditions that had to be meet 48 hours before they arrived, then cancelled the whole thing with less than 21 hours notice!
I must have been stupid to fall for it !!!!!!!!
Regards Shaun.
You have made the right move - opted out - who needs the hassle.
Hi@Shaun.
Id cancel the photo shoot and I’d cancel air bnb plus.
