Can / should I require photo of driver's license prior to arrival?

Very knew hosts here! What did you decide to do? I know most hosts in my neighborhood require DLs and I would like to do the same, especially during spring break weeks to verify the renter is of age. Any idea logistically as to the process of when to request it? Prior to accepting the booking? One month out? How does one go about requesting that. Also, would anyone be willing to share their short term rental contract they request prior to access information?

Hi @Jennifer4392, I hope you don't mind I moved your comment to create a new thread, as it is quite an old thread. Turning this into a fresh, new thread means there will be potentially more eyes on it and hopefully some advice too!

I also wanted to share another thread regarding Host asking for ID from Guest who made a group booking.

Additionally, I'd like to tag a few lovely Hosts who have responded on similar threads who may be able to provide some help @Elaine701 @Jamie1155 😊

Thank you, @Sophia .

Over here, we are required by law to collect ID copies of all adults staying in the accommodation ON OR BEFORE ARRIVAL. And it's completely normal, so it's expected.

One other observation/comparison is that over here, it's perfectly common to have to show ID for things. In fact, we have government-issued ID cards for that purpose.

At the same time, over here I am not aware of the widespread "identity theft" that Americans fear so much. I don't know why that is, but we don't seem to have much of that over here.

So, I sense it's more a matter of what people are used to and comfortable with. Yet, I think any hotel in the US will demand copy of ID (?). So why would it be so unexpected in an Airbnb?

We need to know who is staying in the property for accountability. Is that unreasonable? If they don't like it, then they can always go elsewhere.
