European Locks and Western Tourists

European Locks and Western Tourists

I just had quite an unfortunate experience being locked out of a rental in Cannes. The agency had a spare, but the door would not open with the spare because the key was on the other side of the lock.

Some Quick facts:

Lock changed just before rental. Was advised of new lock in welcome email.

The door can only be opened with the key.

The host asks that the guest removes garbage from the apartment and places in garbage chute located in stairwell outside apartment. (Cleaning fee is also charged)

Guest is locked out of apartment in stairwell.

Door was left ajar but upon returning was closed. (May not have been left wide enough)

In a case like where the host's spare key cannot open the door because of the type of lock installed, who should cover the cost of the locksmith?

How awful for you. The owner is responsible.

@Simone1568 I'm going to go with the host being responsible because the lock is not really fit for the purpose of short term rental.
