What type of covers do you use in the summer months? Currently have duvet covers but seems so time consuming for cleaners.

HI @JoAnn2219 ,
We use duvet covers and inserts. Yes, they are time consuming and we have 9 individual beds (not every bed is used every time, that is unusual).
Our beds are made up like this:
- sheet set (top sheet and bottom sheet)
- blanket
- duvet/duvet cover
- winter: we add a quilt at the end of the bed
We have enough back ups so that things can be stripped off and replaced without having to wait on laundry.
The duvet covers, unless something has happened, often get a 15 minute wash cycle as they are removed enough to not necessarily warrant a need for a deep clean.

Great question @JoAnn2219
We never use duvet covers—just too time-consuming during turnovers. Instead, we go with a top sheet and a lightweight coverlet. It’s easier for cleaners, still feels hotel-level nice, and looks tidy on the bed. We don’t wash the duvet insert every time—typically every 3rd stay unless we notice the top sheet wasn’t used or the coverlet was taken off. In those cases, we wash it, no question.
We also always use zippered mattress protectors (highly recommend!). They’re great insurance against unsightly or permanent stains. If one ever gets marked—even slightly—we toss and replace it. Same for pillow protectors. Accidents happen (bedwetting, periods—you name it), and this makes sure the core bedding always stays in great shape.
Not everyone will agree with how we do everything, and that’s okay! But we’ve hosted thousands of guests and are currently sitting at 1,944 reviews with an average of 4.86 stars—can’t wait to celebrate our 2,000th soon! So, for us, this balance of care, practicality, and protection works really well.
We double protect the mattress and pillows with waterproof protection. The mattress is completely encased then we use another top mattress protector that we wash between every guest.
So we use 2 mattress proctectors.
Fitted and top sheets.
Bedspread
Comforter with duvet.
After each guest we wash the top proctors on both the mattress and pillows, the sheets, the bedspread then the duvet. The comforter gets washed once a year or as needed.
We have a second set of everything so it is just a matter changing out to the second set then laundry can be done later. We feel that washing everything is more sanitary and makes the bed more cozy.

Hi @JoAnn2219
I am based along the coastal Kenya where it’s generally warm and humid all year round, so we actually don’t use duvets at all. We go with lightweight cotton sheets or simple bed covers instead. They are much easier for our cleaners to handle and still keep guests comfortable. I think if you are finding duvet covers a bit of a hassle during summer, I would definitely recommend giving lighter layers a try. It makes things much simpler for us and still looks great on the beds.
Wishing you all the best with your hosting journey!
Hello @JoAnn2219 - Happy to share my thoughts!
I personally used to do a duvet and comforter combo. However, you are correct, way too much work for the cleaning crew (or me when I sometimes clean / do final touches).
So I found an affordable comforter intended to stand alone. It’s perfect and I have 2 for each bed. While one is being washed, the other is on the bed. When one is too damaged or stained, I replace it and donate the old one to charity (if the condition permits).
I also have extra blankets in a basket in the living room incase anyone needs a little extra warmth but I’ve only heard good things about the bedding.
Solid price too, from $30 to $50 on Amazon. Love them. You can see them in my listing.
Happy to share links if you’re interested. Cheers!
I remove the down comforters and just have light coverlets on each bed. I love those I can get at Homegoods from Portugal. They have texture, look high end and have a bit of weight to them, but are easy to wash between guests.
We double fold the sheet over the coverlet about 6 inches to help keep them together and protect the coverlet similarly to how hotels triple sheet their comforters. We have extra blankets or a quilt folded at the end of each bed in case they want extra layers.
I’ve been using duvet covers myself and haven’t had any issues yet
I use regular bedding. Spend a little extra on quality linens and pillows but just use the standard, easy to clean and change sheets and blankets. I put the comforters in the closet during the summer months and use lighter blankets; it helps keep guests from setting the thermostat to 65 degrees. 😉
Hi JoAnn, I use duvets. I found the softest duvet covers ever while staying in a Lux home in Park City, Utah-where I fell in luv w/them. They are the brand Jennifer Adams, and you can find them at Costco, where they are reasonably priced vs on their website. I have them on my bed at home as well. It is like sleeping on a cloud. 💛☁️💛
Happy Hosting!!
