Is it still necessary to have a "house phone"- a land line for guests? With high-speed internet and free Wi-Fi, that everyone connects their phones to, I am considering cancelling my local phone service.

I have not had a land line for years. A landline is almost useless for me because everyone has their smartphone with their own number.

And even without a smartphone plan, you can make phone calls to someone else using apps like wechat or whatsapp, as long as you have Wifi. This brings me to my next point. Wifi and reliable internet is a necessity.

I actually went without TV service for the longest time as well. Until Bell offered me a combo with TV & internet that made internet cheaper.  I'm not really using the bundled TV at all, but it still works out to be a net discount.

Hi @Jim100

I can't recall the last time I stayed in an Airbnb with a landline. I'm also not aware of any Airbnb in my area with a landline. I'm sure you can disconnect it without any worries.

@Jim100   Check your local vacation rental laws.

Mine have not changed and I am required to have a 911 capable phone.  I bundled with my internet provider and have a phone on the wall of the property.  Cell phone service is spotty and not all carriers provide decent reception in our location, so this wall phone has come in handy.

@Jim100 What gave you the idea that a land line was necessary? I've never heard of such a requirement.
