Tip Box for cleaner

Thinking in putting a tip box in some of my apartments for my cleaner. I think this will make her feel more appreciated and it will encourage her to do an even better job.

Has anyone else done this? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this and whether you thinking its a good or bad idea.

For me, if I'm renting a room. The least I expect from it is for it to be clean. I'm on holiday, I don't want to be made to think about tipping the cleaner. I'd hope she was doing ok anyway. If I saw a tip jar I'd think it would reflect badly on their boss.

Dear Jessica,

I am totally on your side, it is a wonderful gesture on your part.

Unfortunately, few people are on our side.  Strangely, you see here that even many HOSTS are against tipping. Why I am not sure, but they are.

Nor does Airbnb support tipping. They do not have a tip line item, nor do they publically explain the benefits of tipping (better service, happier support people, the empowerment of kindness...). Airbnb believes your housekeeper's family can survive on "stars".

On the outside, the internet bloggers have claimed that you should not tip your airbnb host or housekeeper - bring cookies instead!

I love to tip. I tip my servers 20%, I leave taxi drivers or Uber driver $2 - even though they are the owner/contractors.

I do tip my Airbnb hosts $20 - $40.

It makes me feel good that I can show appreciation for service.

Jessica, I think it would be nice if you left a tip jar with a note explaining that 100% of tips go to your housekeeper.  It shows generousity of spirit and would make your housekeeper's day

I wish my guests were as nice as you are. I have cooked, washed, baby-sat, tour-guided and driven guests around for not even a penny in appreciation. Nothing. At. All. Guests even invited me out, even after I told them it's out of current budget and they insisted that they would pay, only to have them search the bill for what they ate and paid for that. It was a good thing my 6th sense told me to bring my card! Most guests are tightwads, unfortunately, so nowadays I only do etra stuff for people I genuinely find likeable and I feel good extending a friendly gesture.

Fully agree. I was surprised to read so many comments against specially because USA and Mexico are used to tip for services like waiters, bellboys, cleaning staff in hotels, etc etc but it is fine; we all have different points of views and each of us has to make their own decision. What I will do:

I will not put a Tip box BUT I will mention in our house manual and leave a note in our printed booklet saying that tips are welcome and fully optional; guest can - if they want - give it directly to the person, leave an envelop or thru airbnb portal

I feel like I will be somehow in the middle of the "full NO" and "full YES" approach

@Jessica4 Hi Jessica. I agree with the responses here. The way I reward my cleaners is if we get a positive comment from a guest regarding the state of the home, I will immediately let her know and praise her. This works wonders and keeps them motivated.

Best of luck!

Deb

Cleaner comes after guests have left. Guests pay the cleaner. It's added to their invoice.
