Airbnb Rejecting a Valid Tax Identification Number – Has Anyone Experienced This?

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone in the community has experienced something similar or can offer some advice.

I'm an Airbnb host in Kenya. Airbnb is suddenly rejecting my Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Personal Identification Number (PIN), which is Kenya's taxpayer identification number, and is treating it as invalid.

The issue is that my KRA PIN is active and valid. I've confirmed this directly with the Kenya Revenue Authority through their customer care, visited their offices in person, and verified it using their official PIN checker.

What makes this even more confusing is that Airbnb had already accepted this exact same tax identification number. They have been using it for tax reporting and even issued multiple Kenyan withholding tax certificates using it, including certificates issued between 31 July and 3 August 2026.

Despite that, Airbnb's system now suddenly says my tax identification number is invalid and has started withholding 20% tax from my payouts.

I've followed every instruction provided by both Airbnb and the Kenya Revenue Authority, including ensuring that my tax records are up to date. The Kenya Revenue Authority has confirmed that my tax identification number is valid and there is nothing wrong with it.

Unfortunately, every Airbnb Support representative I contact redirects me to the same case manager, but he has stopped responding to my messages, leaving my case at a standstill.

Has anyone experienced Airbnb suddenly rejecting a tax identification number that had previously been accepted?

If so:

- How was it resolved?

- Was it a technical issue on Airbnb's side?

- Was your case escalated to the tax team?

- How long did it take to fix?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Everyone,

After almost 2 months of this painful back-and-forth, I summarized everything for Airbnb, told them that it's affecting many of us, our PIN checker validates the PIN, tax records are OK, our regulator has also confirmed the same, and that the very PIN they're rejecting is the same one they validated earlier this year and have been using to tax us; so ideally it kinda makes no sense; shared this thread from here as well. Told them what the 20% means to us given our earnings and economy; bcs, I don't know about y'all, but on my end, I've already heavily discounted my listing bcs of how bad the market has been, 1 20%deduction is as good as me not doing the business, and that they'll eventually chase us from the platform. I was alreday plannin to unlist plus cancel my existing booking. I requested them to deal with KRA directly from a partner level as this seems to be a system glitch on either end, instead of leaving us to our own individual devices. Seems finally tumeelewana, here is the response they gave me today. I'll share feedback here once they reach out again and what the outcome will be. I hope it'll be solved. Fingers crossed!

Message from Airbnb:
Thank you for providing this detailed context and for sharing the link to the Airbnb Community Center thread.
I completely understand your frustration and anxiety regarding this issue. A 20% withholding tax instead of the standard 5% rate heavily impacts your business profitability, and I recognize the urgency of getting this resolved so you do not have to consider unlisting your property or canceling upcoming reservations.

Based on the extensive community data and the fact that your information was previously accepted, validated, and used to issue tax certificates earlier this year, we are treating this as a widespread system synchronization issue rather than an individual account error. It appears there is a technical mismatch between the automated validation interface and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) system.

Thank you for successfully submitting your Kenya PIN (Personal Identification Number) tax information. We are writing to confirm that we have received it and it is currently being processed by our verification team.

Banner Status: The notification banner on your dashboard will automatically disappear as soon as our team completes the validation process.

Confirmation Notification: We will send you an email confirmation the moment your tax information is fully verified.

Tax Rate Reduction: Once your PIN is confirmed, your tax withholding rate will be automatically lowered to 5%.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us keep your account compliant. If our specialized team requires any further details from you, we will reach out directly.

Best Regards,
Airbnb Support

This is a better response than anything we have gotten. I will also use the same format on my end to push for this to be resolved quickly.

I am going through the same thing. I reported it to airbnb. They said I verify that my information is correct. Yet the same pin they say is invalid has produced several withholding certificates from their end. The 20% deduction is unnecessary. It honestly seems like a system issue from airbnb side. There many hosts in Kenya experiencing the same issue. We ate loosing alot of money to the point hosts are cancelling their bookings because the business is no longer profitable with 15% host service deductions and the 20% tax deduction (which is illegal if you genuinely have a valid PIN). Can they listen to the user and solve the issue before things get out of hand in Kenya. Listen to the consumer!!

Hi Miriam,

I am experience   the same, did you get any help ?  or was it sorted ?

How did you get it fixed?

Hi there, just wondering if anyone has yet managed to get this resolved. I’ve open many cases, phone multiple times a day. I’ve had cases escalated and promises for calls back, but absolutely zero, despite explaining it’s an issue bigger than just one affecting me. It’s been 2 weeks now. Has anyone managed to solve the issue?

No actually no one has

maybe we should form a WhatsApp group and  chat a way forward

may be agree for us to all call Airbnb all at once

I have called and taken round and round in circles with no resolution, very frustrating

I have had the same issue and to it has been a very frustrating process to say the least. I have called and messaged airbnb support multiple times without any resolution

As you can see from people's comments, we have done that but no help. It's now going to the 3rd week.

We have reached out to customer support numerous times  without a resolution, very frustrating to say the least

I am still experiencing the problem and being deducted 20%. Like everyone else, I have followed all channels and instructions given by Airbnb Support, to no avail.  I have also tried advise from other hosts, still no resolution. KRA too.

It's adversely affecting my income and cash flow.
