Automatic Occupancy Taxes and unhelpful support

Automatic Occupancy Taxes and unhelpful support

I contacted Airbnb support, because I have a question about my e-mail receipts from them. The e-mail says: "Your guest paid kr 26.32 in Occupancy Taxes. Airbnb remits these taxes on your behalf.".

I suspect this is not correct and have asked how it is calculated and where it goes. After telling me in general how occupancy taxes work and discussing back and forth about what the address is etc, the supporter says: "For the time being, your listing address is not included in the list of jurisdictions where Airbnb facilitates this tax collection".

So I go back to my original question. What is that text in the e-mail? Why is it there? How is it calculated? Who are you sending the info and the money to?

I restate my question to the support person and get another general answer about my responsobilities, but not a word about the text in the e-mail and what it means. And then he says: "This decision is based on a thorough review of all available information and remains final". I don't even understand what decision he is refering to. As far as I know I haven't asked any question that requires a decision. I am just asking about clarification, so that I know what I need to do and what Airbnb is doing. Then the case is closed and I can't follow up. That was super unhelpful.

I haven't enabled anything on my end for occupancy taxes or other taxes.

Can someone here tell me how this is possible? Why is there a text on my receipts that says Airbnb is collecting and remitting occupancy taxes for me, when I am not in an "jurisdictions where Airbnb facilitates this tax collection"?

Maybe this article helps:

Responsible hosting in Denmark:

https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1382

Areas where tax collection and remittance by Airbnb is available

(Denmark is not listed):

https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/2509

Your listing shows NO taxes are charged from a guest, I simulated a 1 night booking, see screen shot:

Conclusion: the email you received is weird !

Hope this helps

It is NOT in Denmark, but in the Faroe Islands 🙂

I think the e-mail is wrong and was hoping to get Airbnb to verify this and fix the e-mail. But they closed the case without an answer.

@Limberg0

I learned from WIkipedia it is part of Denmark: (?)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands

But anyway:

Airbnb support useally seems to closes a case if they do not know the answer.....

Maybe email it is sent by error and hopefully you will not recieve such emails again.

It can be a bit difficult to get a straight answer from Support when you don't have a routine-type question @Limberg0 . First-line Support gives auto-generated answers.

Is there perhaps a Host Club in your region that you can join to ask whether other local hosts have received such an email? If you look at the menu on the left of this screen, you can scroll all the way down to "Local Host Clubs".
