Scam alert! How can I make sure a listing is real?

Scam alert! How can I make sure a listing is real?

This will be my first time using Airbnb so I'm a bit weary about listings being fake.

What can I do to make sure a listing is real and not a scam?

What should I be looking out for?

Thanks

Welcome to Airbnb!

Here are a few things you can do to make sure the listing is real:

(1) Look at the reviews and make sure they seem to talk about the same place you are booking

(2) If the listing says anything about contacting the host outside of Airbnb before booking, DO NOT - this is a well-known scam.

(3) Look at the listing - if it seems "too good to be true" (aka luxurious penthouse for a super low rate) it probably is!

You can also post the link here and we can weigh in on our thoughts.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. @Sarah977

Which listing is fake/real? Or are they both a scam?! I'm trying to book in Paris but both listings show details of the same apartment photos with reviews but drastically different pricing. I reached out to both hosts but wanted to get outside input first.

I'm considering booking this place but there is no reviews & it's nonrefundable. Is it a scam? What do you guys think? Thanks.

@My-Hang0 looks OK to me. The hosts does have reviews for other properties and you can pay extra for a refundable option if you want to. If it is a scam they will ask you to pay direct rather than via Airbnb.

is this a scam? I’ve never done Airbnb before.

@Nelly336 looks ok to me- just ask how they plan to collect and return the security deposit.

@Nicolae16  Yes, it is a scam. That is not an Airbnb URL.

can someone tell me if this is legit ?

Because it has a review that lists a couple negative things, my guess is it is legit. But that is just my thoughts. If they were listing something fake and trying to get people to book it, they'd leave positive reviews.

Can anybody tell me their thoughts on this stay and if it is a scam? I'm a bit worried due to no reviews. But I found it via the app.

@Jenny1498  You don't have any reviews, either. Should hosts be wary of you? 🙂

Everyone, both hosts and guests, start out with no reviews. That is a new listing, so of course it has no reviews yet. There's nothing about it that looks fake to me.

Are you aware that you can click on the "Contact Host" button in the listing to send an Inquiry message to the host? This doesn't obligate you in any way, and it's a good way to set your mind at ease if you don't see enough info to make you right away feel okay about booking. There's no need to book anything without some communication first.

(That host really hasn't provided much of a description, but I see that a lot with new listings. There's actually a weird way Airbnb has hosts set up a new listing- none of the other description fields, like "The Space" or "Guest Access" are available to fill out when first publishing. Hosts have go back and edit afterwards, which a lot of new hosts aren't aware of.)
