Hi everyone — I’m a shared host (on-site) and wanted to raise a safety question I recently ran into.
I use a Yale smart lock through Airbnb. When I logged into the Yale app to make a routine change, I discovered that the Airbnb integration creates multiple permanent “always-on” backup door codes that I can’t configure, expire, or remove — even when no guest is staying.
I originally moved to a smart lock specifically so access could be revoked after a stay, since physical keys can be copied. In an occupied home, permanent access codes that exist outside a reservation feel risky.
I’ve escalated this to Airbnb Trust & Safety, but I wanted to share a few possible alternatives that seem safer for shared homes and see what others think:
Allow shared hosts to opt out of permanent backup codes by default
Limit backup access to active reservations only
Let hosts choose a physical emergency key option instead of permanent digital codes
Require guest acknowledgment in the app once inside, after which backup access is reduced or disabled
Treat shared hosting as a distinct safety category from vacant whole-home listings
I’m curious:
Are other shared hosts aware of these permanent backup codes?
Do these alternatives seem reasonable to you?
How are you handling access in shared homes?
Sharing so we can have a constructive discussion and help each other make informed decisions.
Hi @Shane754 👋
You definitely did the right thing by sharing this with the Airbnb team. Did you hear anything further from them after you posted?
I also have a shared home with electric locks. I manage the security codes myself on an app on my phone. Because it is were I live I prefer control just in case. I have never had to but if I control then if necessary I could delete a code immediately to deny access. I also because it did happen once years ago, I do not give the code until at check in I do a visual check of a legal ID that confirms reservation name.
I don't suggest Home share Hosts use the Airbnb lock integration.
Disconnect the lock from Airbnb and handle the codes yourself.
