my rental runs out in the middle of coronavirus quarantine in spain and airbnb says its not their problem dont even offer to reimburse fees

i am under strict quarantine in spain. Hospitals are full, not enough respirators, the situation here is extremely serious now.

There are fines if you are on the street if you are not buying food or medicine. My airbnb stay  runs out on Tuesday. i have called airbnb for the last 4 days they kept saying a case manager would contact me back. Today i called again i told them the situation that my rent will run out during the quarantine and due to the coronavirus  3 apartments that i rent out to guests overseas are empty due to cancellations.

Due to this loss of cashflow i cannot afford to pay the high rental price after my rent runs out, during the rest of the quarantine which period is still unknown. And i cannot leave because

1. we are under lock down by law , but 2 . most importantly of all i dont want  be in close contact with people, and at the same time try and figure out what to do next when the country has come to a grinding halt. Airbnb  said its not their problem they didn't even offer to reimburse me or the owner the fees we paid. Is there any overlooking body like an obnudsman or legal i can take on airbnb?

i have contacted the owner to explain the situation hopefully i can work  out an affordable price with them due to this unforeseen situation.  Airbnb are inhumane. Just a huge faceless company

I am sorry to hear your property management company is struggling. @Piers21

All small businesses are in the same boat.

If you are going to have problems struggling to pay your own personal rent, are you not able to apply for housing benefit and other welfare benefits in Spain to help cover your costs.

i am not living here, i am travelling. I still have some cash flow from other sources  but not enough to pay a high airbnb price on a daily basis for the quarantine.  The whole point of this post is airbnb will wipe their hands clean of you. People need to understand the extent of the situation here and probably what your countries will experience very shortly. EVERYTHING IS CLOSED, EXCEPT ESSENTIAL SERVICES THE COUNTRY HAS COME TO A GRINDING HALT.  applying for a housing benefit when you are travelling and being stuck in a quarantine would be impossible. no one is working and housing benefit is long term thing that takes time to sort out anyway. as soon as the quarantine is over i am out of here. airbnb will not help you if you have a problem during corona and quarantine. The owner and guest will have to figure something out during a full scale lock down of the country.  Sound easy?

@Piers21 have you looked on Airbnb to find a different place in the same town? I am sure you can get between the two by shopping on the way.

As  you are a host I would have hoped that you recognise that your host should not lose out due to this situation.

Finally what exactly do you expect Airbnb to do? This crisis was not of their making.

i dont know what country you are in. but please understand no one wants to go near each other, saying things like check other places out and moving places is not an option here now we are under quarantine i am sure there are plenty of people who still have their ads up but most  hosts wont take new  people because they are obeying the quarantine and same here ,i dont want to go near anyone, whats the point of having a quarantine and locking the country down and then not adhering to the rules. if i am contagious or somebody else is we may have asymptomatic symptoms where we dont know we got it and pass it on. and yes i dont want my host to loose thats why i asked for airbnb to help the situation ,as i am nervous myself and so is everybody else is here to go out, if i catch the virus and dont get sick i may still end up passing it on to someone else and they die. i am not going to risk that over a rental. i have messaged the owner and offered them rent which would be the normal rental price of someone renting off a real estate agent long term, not like airbnb hotel price. and as soon as the quarantine is lifted i will leave

airbnb takes a fee, they are responsible for the guest and the hosts well being, as you can see this is a serious situation, in extreme circumstances for people being stuck in a forced quarantine they should reimburse the fees they took from the host and the owner and give it to the host and help mediate a reasonable rental price through the rest of quarantine. without mediation and help and quarantine like this other renters and hosts may end up having severe conflicts between each.

@Piers21

I get you, I hear you, and I understand what you're saying. I think all your points are valid and for me, well taken. I'm sorry you're getting some inappropriate responses.

AirBnB is not equipped to handle this and they will leave you hanging: you, me and everyone else associated with them.

Hey, even some governments are throwing people under the bus.

These are unprecedented times. It's time to be creative and improvise: you will find a solution, but thanks for the warning from Spain.

also if the renter did manage to theoretically some how leave, the apartment would be empty since no on is renting new places in the middle of a quarantine

@Piers21

I sympathize with you but..... I have to ask..... what exactly are you expecting Airbnb to do? Quarantine doesn't mean you are eligible for free room and board or that someone is going to pay you for NOT staying in your empty apartment during a global pandemic/epidemic.

@Piers21   I would contact the local authorities and ask them for guidance.  Perhaps you can get a test and if you test negative you would be allowed to leave and go home.  But, you surely must see that you staying in a place for free for an indeterminate amount of time is not fair to the host.
