I had a broken disposal as well and upon tearing down I found a rubber hair tie (the ponytail holder) in it as well as some metal pieces. I ended up replacing the machine due to time strain although I pretty much believe if I remove all the matters it should return to working order, given that when I switch it on I can hear the motor trying to spin until the fuse pops.
Usually it's difficult to claim water leakage against guest fault. You can try to picture the stuffs found from inside the disposal and give it a chance. I'm pretty sure there are something unintended that the guest has thrown into it.
Sometimes disposal can be damaged due to not being used for too long. I had another disposal stopped working after not switching on for like a year. The problem was that the dishwasher was attached to it so it constantly receives waste water from dishwasher that cause rust and ultimately jammed the gear. I managed to free the gear by clearly up a ton of rust and gunk and it returned to working condition, but it failed again after a couple months and then I replaced it.
