Had the sweetest breakfast chat this morning with a guest who dropped some Easter wisdom I never knew I needed!
In the Philippines, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus—hope, renewal, new life. But I asked, why the bunnies and eggs? And the answer was so fascinating I had to share:
The Easter Bunny actually comes from ancient European traditions, long before Christianity. Hares were symbols of spring and fertility, and they’re tied to a pagan goddess named Ēostre (or Ostara), who represented dawn and new beginnings. As Christianity spread, these springtime symbols became part of Easter.
And eggs? Early Christians used them as symbols of Jesus’ tomb—cracked open to represent resurrection. During Lent, people gave up rich foods like eggs, so they became a special part of Easter feasts. Decorating them became a joyful tradition across cultures.
So next time you see a chocolate bunny or pastel egg, know there’s a whole blend of history, faith, and folklore behind it. I love learning how traditions evolve across the globe. One of my favorite aspects in hosting! Happy Easter to all my fellow hosts! Do share how you celebrate Easter in your respective countries.
What a lovely topic @Bea2137! Thank you so much for sharing! 😊
From the UK - Irish and Welsh heritage, I grew up catholic so it was always a time that we got together as a family; celebrating the resurrection of Jesus and go to church. However, as I've got older and perhaps moved away from the church - it still represents new life. It's my favourite time of year to go out and start planning my garden, as well as spring cleaning. We were invited to our neighbours house recently to celebrate Passover too - what a lovely experience that was.
I'm interested to know how other hosts spend this time too - @Rudolf103, @Kwesi9 and @Jamie1262 - do you do anything special for this time of year? 😊
Thanks for tagging me, @Rebecca ! It's always fascinating to see how others celebrate.
Being a Dutch-Hungarian family in Budapest, we've really embraced the local Easter traditions. The Monday "Locsolkodás" is quite something – it involves the boys playfully sprinkling the girls with water or perfume while reciting little rhymes. We also spend time decorating eggs with traditional patterns.
Easter here also means lots of delicious, traditional food, and I always enjoy helping my wife in the kitchen. This year was a bit memorable though – our kids finally caught my wife in the act of being the Easter bunny when she forgot we'd already opened the curtains! 😄
Thanks for stopping by @Rudolf103 😍 Easter sounds like a lovely celebration in your home! The "Locsolkodás" tradition is quite unique, isn't it? I'd love to know more about it's origin. Is this a local event or something just between families?
I also love decorating eggs with my kids as well. And it’s nice that you get to spend time cooking together - what’s your favourite dish to make during Easter? Usually, in the UK, it's lamb at Easter time - not for me though - I'm vegetarian! 🥕

Easter is celebrated in my Caribbean American Culture is a Christian Holy Week of celebration , it starts on Holy Thursday where we pray no (Meats) is eaten, except for Fish on Good Friday, dying on the Cross of Jesus Christ, Holy Saturday, only seafood was celebrated, Easter Sunday the resurrection of Crist where a feast is eaten and Kite flying high to celebrate Jesus Christ has Risen, Easter Monday & Tuesday of more Kite flying and celebrated as Holidays in the Caribbean.
Our Symbols are Eggs, where rebirth or Birth start, Bunny's, where we have Rabbits in April more frequent and Kites, because of the High winds around the Easter celebration, with competition of the most beautiful and highest soaring kite to heaven.
