My husband has to travel for work this upcoming weekend. He is stressed about it in this time of Covid and its short notice. He IBed a place in the city where he is headed today after getting his health certificate for travel. The host messaged a few hours later that they have a pipe burst and asked him to cancel. He is a polite guy and said ok. The days are still open on this listing and if I wanted to book it right now I could. But whatever.
He chose another spot that did not have IB. Wrote a nice note to the host with a pic of his clean bill of health Covid results. The host wrote back that she was sorry but she does not host other hosts. My husband is just getting a hotel now.
Besides being the world's nicest person he has 2 reviews from good friends that are glowing so I am sure his star score is fine for IB. He is in no way a difficult guest. Has anyone had this happen?
@Lawrene0 yes, this is short notice and he would not be going if he didn't absolutely need to. We have hosted other hosts and I always message saying "its such an honor when a host chooses us because you know exactly how much care is put into an Airbnb property." They usually respond with a "right??!" and some anecdotes. I have never had anyone reject me but I have not done a boatload of traveling with Airbnb recently. I am sure the day will come. If anything these folks who 86'ed my husband were foolish as he is far easier to accommodate than I am. He just wants a clean place to lay his head. I want a nice bath tub, cute decor, best possible location, etc.
Add me to the list that cringes when I find out I'm hosting a host, they have not been the worst of the worst guests, but generally are worse than normal. I would never tell anyone I wouldn't host them for that reason, but I'm always on heightened alert. It's one of those things, where the common sense view that a host would be a much better guest, just isn't true in my experience.
@Mark116 I'm trying to think of a service profession in which there's some consensus that people who have the same job are great customers. Drawing a blank on that one...I remember a doctor telling me once that he found other doctors to be the worst patients, and I worked with a chef who had a total meltdown when a chef of similar renown came into the restaurant.
@Anonymous , that is true for sure!!!!
Our first ever guests were hosts from Australia. They were absolutely brilliant and great fun to host.
@Laura2592 , I haven’t done that much travel on Airbnb, but have 2 upcoming trips, I’m highly looking forward to. My first experiences in Airbnb were so good that’s the reason I started hosting. My last experience was so so, but everytime I learn something and I would never take it out on the host, always 5 star. I have very high expectations, but honestly to me it all comes down to the bed and linens. I’m trying to convince my husband only to use Airbnb as he travels for work frequently. He’s not picky at all, but does like coffee which he can get at Best Western but not guaranteed at Airbnb, at least we know now and can pack accordingly.
@Michelle1851 As far as I'm concerned, coffee is as essential as toilet paper 🙂
At least enough for the first morning until I can go shopping.
Salut @Laura2592,
I did have few negative experience to hosting local host in my listing, doubt their motivation.
Do their really need a accommodations ?
Since they are hosting in the same city or staying not far from Paris.
Since my listing is instantly booking, we do Welcome other host to stay.
Yet, keep our eyes open in order to do the very best !
Of course, I meet some great host who’s staying in my place and glad that we shared our hosting experience. Make new friends and keep in contact.
We did refuse other host to stay, when that a special request as check in early, drop off luggage, check in after midnight, third party booking, pick up from airport services......
it’s a “opportunity” to declined their stay.... lol.
Nope, we haven't been declined because we are a host.
But, I will say that one host, who wanted to stay with us, also wanted to communicate outside of the Airbnb app. They wrote in the app that they know how fees, etc., work, asked for a discount (no biggie, can't fault anyone for asking) but then asked us to email them. Nope, no, thank you. We politely declined and said our prices are what they are, that we offer a good value, etc.
I do not think I have been rejected for being a host, but I always choose entire places with Instant Book, and I do have obtained some very good reviews over the years. But reading all the horror stories on this forum, I have entertained the thought that some might be dreading hosting me (us), and it is difficult not to compare with my own short term rentals.
My first ever airbnb stay had all the red flags in the book; local and asking for a discount. I had a very good reason for booking, but I could tell they were still sceptical. We left each other glowing reviews, so all ended well.
Last summer/autumn we booked several; some I loved, some I liked and some I did not like so much, but still gave 5* reviews and I think one was undeserved as the place smelled badly of damp. Am I turning into a bad guest ??
@Sarah977 it is so many years ago, I am not really sure. Probably because I compared with my own airbnb regarding value. Same city, city center, comparable offer. Mine were probably too cheap at the time to be honest. I was their first or second guest and my review did give them a flying start, I am reasonaby sure of that.
No, I wasn't rejected and I host other hosts but for me, they are guests like all others... except one thing - they tend to offer some suggestions on how I should improve my listing. Like, after a day or two spent at my place they know something I don't know after 4 years of hosting. It's really irritating.
You made me laugh, thanks! It is always good for me to get another host's ideas about my place. I've found that it is so familiar to me that another set of eyes is truly valuable.
well, to me it isn't valuable, just irritating 😉 If something is as it is then there is probably a good reason for it, they just didn't think about it, or they are from another continent and they are not used to it.
Anyway, I would also always leave 5 stars to other hosts bc I know how things work here on ABB
