Now that the Covid vaccine is being rolled out, we're seeing a lot of hosts asking questions about how to make vaccination a condition of entry. I'm not personally in favor of hosts asking for private medical documents, and in many jurisdictions it would be illegal to do so, but these are exceptional times and it's understandable that in-home hosts are trying to find a way to host safely again. As long as Airbnb grants an exemption to the cancellation policy when guests say they've tested positive, hosts have every reason to prefer guests who aren't at risk of this.
So far, the vast majority of people who are able to travel have not had access to the vaccine, but this will hopefully change over the next months. And even though it's a thorny topic, this is the time that hosts really need Airbnb to issue some guidance about how hosts can set requirements here. Can hosts request medical documents, even if they're not qualified to authenticate them? Will the Non-Discrimination Policy be applied to hosts who discriminate against unvaccinated guests?
@Catherine-Powell I hope this is addressed in the next policy update from Airbnb, because it's increasingly clear that most in-home hosts have no real intention of adhering to the "protocol" that they were aggressively bullied into saying they would follow. If Airbnb is willing to allow people to require guests to be vaccinated, I hope we'll have an on-platform format for guests to enter their data without compromising their medical privacy. But otherwise, I hope we can at least have a loud and clear announcement of what hosts can and can't ask for, so we don't have people's businesses destroyed weeks later by a complaint that they fell afoul of a policy that didn't exist yet.
@** My desired outcome is for Airbnb to provide some clarity about what practices will and won't be permitted on their platform, so that everyone can make informed decisions about how to proceed. We take as a given that they have their own interests as a company, that aren't always symmetrical to the needs of their users, and they've got an army of experts telling them what they can and can't get away with while we don't. So while I'd like them to engage with the community more directly for input, I don't expect that a "collective conclusion" from the very tiny sample of people in this discussion would be the guiding light of any big decisions.
When they do establish their ground rules, I'm sure a lot of debate will follow. And when the consequences of policy choices start emerging, I hope someone up there will take notice and make adjustments. But we're not there yet - we have to know the parameters of that discussion first. And we can't tell Airbnb how to run their business - we can only ask for the information we need to use them as a tool for ours and to decide whether they are the right service for our needs.
It's not a democracy, and I never expected it to be, but I appreciate when they engage with user feedback to improve their product.
Paid staff do monitor these forums in the form of admins. @**
I can't agree that we can't expect Airbnb staff who look after customer service to come here on occasion to take a temperature check of key issues.
Nor in my opinion is it appropriate that a handful of hosts on these forums should be allowed to decide policy on such a major issue.
Sadly the hosts Airbnb appointed to represent us, after an initial burst of activity here seem to be sadly absent in the main.
Perhaps the mods could create a new section of the forum where all the conspiracy mongers could gather and exchange their opinions and rants without cluttering up the topics we want to weigh in on and discuss as intelligent adults.
@Sarah977 The Mods are constantly creating this section but it's constantly getting either burned down by the Jewish Space Lasers or embodied as a child and devoured by Hillary's cannibal emails.
Hi @Sarah977 @Anonymous,
I hope you're both well.
We have seen questions being raised on various vaccination topics. We have made the team aware of the situation regarding the vaccination policy, and rest assured it is being worked on as we speak.
I can't let you know when it will be ready but will share it by on the CC and in your thread specifically when it is prepared, and ensure you're kept in the loop.

@Quincy Thank you for the update, and I'm glad to hear a policy is under development.
@** It would be pointless to tag everyone who participated in a group discussion.

@** My concern is not about what people say in their bios, it's what rules and standards Airbnb will apply when they result in a dispute or complaint. I'm inclined to wait until they've issued a detailed statement - hopefully soon - before drawing any conclusions about what that policy will be.
I don't know if the range of opinions expressed on the CC will influence the actual policy, but I hope it at least shows what questions that policy will have to answer.
@** I've already listed the questions I'd like to see answered by the policy. Perhaps you have your own questions to add, but it's best that you do that in your own voice rather than try to put words in other people's mouths.
It's not up to any of us to dictate who can and can't enter a discussion in a public venue, but we're all free to choose which voices we prefer to ignore. I'll try to avoid tagging you if that is a negative trigger.
@** I believe you can block posters on here if you don't want to see their posts.
No one "owns" a thread simply because they started a topic and anyone is free to respond. Mature adults simply skip over posts from posters whose comments they dislike or click on the Ignore option.
And if one is so sensitive that they are "deeply traumatized" by a response, perhaps they would be better off not participating in forums where people express differing points of view.
It would be good if everyone take a breath for a second, no need for us to cut each other up, we can get enough of that from our guests and the mothership. Business owners like modern day inn keepers are generally strongly opinionated and most ready to take on all situations but I dont think many of us were or are prepared for Covid coming to our town and or listings. It would be good if everyone's observations and professional (we are after all professionals) opinions could be shared on here, both those with the science and those without. We cant just limit our minds to the science cause that is changing on this subject weekly, our observations are part of awareness and alertness needed to move forward.
Back to @Anonymous 's thread, I do what I can in the listing by telling people not to come here sick and to cancel penalty free if they even think they could have covid . Both personally and professionally, we don't believe we are entitled to any medical info about our guests, I feel its up to Mel and I to mitigate the risks to make them acceptable, if we couldn't do that, we couldn't host. Besides as much as I would like to trust humankind to do whats right, people scam, lie and cheat all the time so the only one we trust to tell us the truth at this point is our Maker! Stay well, JR
The German tour operator Alltours announced that guests of their 35 Allsun hotels in some of the most favorite holiday destination are requested to show a vaccine certificate for check-ins from November 1st.
