I was wondering if airbnb aks every guest for an id to be able to book
No. But when they want to make a reservation, they sometimes are forced to upload ID. Then they block the desired dates with "awaiting verification", which is rather annoying.
Well, yes and no Michael!
Anyone can search Airbnb listings, make an enquiry and they can even actually proceed to make a booking without being verified. But every guest new to the platform must verify themselves to Airbnb with positive ID before a reservation can be accepted and proceed.
Airbnb do not always require official government ID, some people do not possess a drivers licence or a passport, so in those instances Airbnb will use a secure data base to match your identity to your banking details or utility bills. An image of the account holder is no longer a mandatory Airbnb requirement which is a concern to some hosts.
It is however up to individual hosts whether they sight ID from guests or not. During the listing set-up process there is a section under Policies entitled, Instant Book and by clicking 'Edit' a drop down box will give the host the option of what level of ID they required from a guest to be able to book.

I don't understand how this two statements can be true at the same time!
Every guest can book without beign verified but every new user must be verified before a reservation can be accepted?
When someone creates a new account, can he book pay and sleep without any verification process?
No Michael, verification is only required for a guests first booking. Once verification has been accepted by Airbnb the guest does not have to go through the process again to book.
A first time guest can book and pay, but the booking is not confirmed until he is verified.
He is given 24 hours to provide positive verification to Airbnb's required standard. If he fails to provide sufficient verification in that 24 hours, the booking lapses and the guest has his payment refunded. But Michael this only happens for new Airbnb users who have not used the platform before.

So you are saying that the only guests who can book without verification are the ones that created their airbnb accounts before verification became mandatory?
Guests do not necessarily need to upload ID to book, as I do receive booking requests from non-verified guest accounts all the time. However I do require all guests to have verified account to book with me. Maybe others don't, but I feel like if one does not even want to show his/her ID to Airbnb then how can I trust him/her?
