Aloha. New to form but not new to hosting. I am a longtime owner 24 years of a condo on island of Maui. I began short term renting back in 2012. First on trip advisor and VRBO then I started on airbnb after Expedia purchased VRBO. It’s been a mostly fun and rewarding experience hosting people from all around the globe. When you share a place you love 💕 it deepens your appreciation for it. Gone through a lot good and lean times to keep my little island place. I protect it as a legacy to pass this special place to my family to enjoy. My husband and I quit our jobs to move here from 2006 to 2014. It was a “working retirement” so my husband would be able to scuba dive and enjoy the ocean more than only while on vacation trips outside of Ohio where we live. Neither of our fathers lived long enough to retire so we decided to do that early.
Family needed us back and I have been renting short term since 2012. I have been through many changes in the website renting communities and in changes on the island. And with all these changes going on, currently, I have decided I need to not be alone in my rental program, but bound together with other voices to help steer changes. That that’s why I am joining here. And any and all rental advocating groups on our island. I advocate for not only diversity, but for access for all people to enjoy the island I feel we are having issues with the big lobbying hotels, and the ultrarich that would like to have complete control over the island. Little voices can become big and loud if we all advocate joining together.
We need good stewardship of this special place or it will be a distant memory. in all things, there is balance. I feel this is getting lost more and more. I am not looking to fill my condo more. I am looking to fill it with better. I look forward to help somehow.
