While my partner and I are super hosts, a family member, an airbnb member, booked us in for one night in a city in France - When we arrived it was nothing like the description as advertised, we thought we were in the wrong apartment block - having found the key safe, a doorway led us to two doors with nothing on either - I heard a TV on one, so presumed it was the door opposite.
On entering the pictures and description of the 'apartment', were nothing like as on airbnb site - it originally said 'your own bedroom' - no such thing it was a small room with a bed in the nniddle, the pictures showed a sofa and casual seating - drawer units etc - in reality no sofa no casual seating just 2 plastic chairs.
There was no kettle, while it did not mention kettle, it said there was a coffee maker - nope, not that either. We made tea in the microwave.
There was a minute bathroom with a shower which you had to squeeze sideways through the wall opening to get into - there were two of us, and the towels provided, if I can describe them as such, was a minute hand towel that looked about 20 years old, and a 'bath' towel which I would say was the size of a larger hand towel, both hanging up in the bathroom - bu the main issue is that there was no hot water (not until the morning) so no shower - I checked to see if the boiler was on, it was, but the mid boggling site I saw when opening the boiler door, were wires hanging from the boiler to an electrical socket while dangling n between, a thermostat dial -the wires came out of a large hole in the wall - I dared not touch it......the water was hot in the morning, so obviously using a cheap rate tariff overnight.
It stated a washing machine and dryer - nope nothing there and judging by the size of the apartment I could not see how or where it could have been plumbed in!
There was a TV and internet, we were not given the code for the wifi so could not use that - the tv was stuck on a channel shopping channel so could not watch any TV etc - behind the TV were several large gaping holes and many wires protruding from them, and btw the wifi hub was hanging by wires from the wall!
There were many other issues, but the important point is the electrical safety issue - an unwitting person could be caught out and I see this as a major accident about to happen.....if this was UK etc the whole block would be shut down by health and safety!
I contacted airbnb via twitter - they responded by asking for the details of the person who actually booked, I have asked said person to contact them.
Nothing heard back as yet - in the meantime we would like to take this further and would like to know who we can contact - we regard this as a serious issue, and delays could cause major claims for any future party, not to mention tragic consequences
Thanks for reading......advice on where - who to contact appreciated asap
@Howard61 Aside from what seems to be a scam listing, why did someone else book for you? As hosts yourself, are you not aware that 3rd party bookings are against the Airbnb TOS?
Why did you not book yourselves? Because the personwho booked didn't stay, you're in a situation where you really don't have a leg to stand on. The person who booked wasn't there, the booking party is the only one who has the right to compain, and their complaints would be hearsay.
One of the key reasons you should never make a third party booking is that you are not protected by Airbnb should the listing not be as advertised as in this case.
As an experienced host why did you have a relative book rather than booking directly yourself @Howard61
@Howard61 Although you are technically a SH, it appears you are unaware of important aspects of the Air BNB terms of agreement. As you can see from your own experience the third party booking muddles the situation greatly. Hopefully as a host you will not make the same mistake.
As to any remedy for the poor experience you had, as others have posted, there really isn't any through Air BNB . So sorry you had to literally had to pay for this lesson.
@Howard61 I'm going to echo the other hosts and say its surprising a host wouldn't just book their own place, why would you have a third party do it?
I'm not sure, since your booking is third party if there is anything you can do, but I would think the proper steps would be to take photos to document how different the apartment is from what was posted, contact Airbnb and ask for a neutral cancellation due to the apartment not being as advertised, as well as missing several listed amenities and then what you believe is a safety issue and see what happens and what Airbnb does in terms of assistance for rebooking and any coupons.
Or, if you are saying that all of you are on the reservation, but it was the family member who booked it, then disregard the stuff about a third party booking and have the family member contact airbnb and do as above.
Thanks for your replies and duly noted - under the serious safety concerns, I think any other issues would be over ridden - And yes I took Photographs - contact with airbnb is underway...
In the meantime I quote from airbnb website...regarding booking by and for other airbnb members
When a person books a trip for someone else, they handle the reservation request, introductions, and payment for the reservation—then transfer responsibility for the trip to the guest. Once a reservation is accepted, both the person booking and the guest join the message thread with the host and receive all trip communication.
@Howard61 As I understand it, it has to be a business trip, otherwise third party bookings aren't allowed, and I would guess if this was a business trip then you would be asked to provide some substantiation that the 'booker' is employed by the same employer, etc. etc.
Hello @Howard61
Can you link to the section you are quoting?
You still haven't said why you didn't make your own booking

@Howard61 I'm sure you know that old saying "if you want something done right, do it yourself."
Think maybe that might apply to booking your Airbnb stay?
