what do I do if the guest tests positive for covid at the airport?

Its my first day as a host! Half excited-half-terrified. I'm an introvert but I love meeting people, especially from other countries. I knew there would be something I hadn't run through on my To Do list, and there would be surprises from guests that could never be guessed.

Thoughts of my community's relatively strict 'mask on' 'vaccinated' 'social distancing' 'extra cleaning' additions were top of the list (one of the many lists), and the airport is in charge of the testing so that part is ok.

But I've suddenly realised that if the guest tests positive at the airport then they have to self-isolate for a fortnight, and they're not supposed to travel any further, definitely not two hours across the city to my place, a place with shared facilities that means no isolation is possible.

Of all the weeks filling in Airbnb's hundreds of questions about every detail of my listing responsibilities and guest needs, it occurs to me that aside from extra cleaning, there were no questions and statements to check yes or no to about vaccines, testing, quarantines, or responsibilities on either side or guidelines to follow to ensure guest and host did the right thing (and knew what would be done).

My bet guess of the safest and fairest action (so far) is that if her result is positive then I have to ask her nicely to withdraw her booking, to avoid me having to cancel, and that she'll stay at out the airport hotel to self-isolate. She might ask where on Airbnb listing info did it advise that - and as far as I know it didn't - so there's no automatic button to press to clear the situation under these circumstances if she disagrees. But its only a three day booking followed by other guests, with shared bathrooms, so I couldn't look after her here anyway!

I'll add something to my listing for the next time. And keep my fingers crossed for this guest because I'm really looking forward to meeting her!

Hi @Morag12  - I'm waving at you from just down the road!

We've announced some changes to the Covid Extenuating Circumstances policy recently, so I wanted to make sure you knew about the update.

@Morag12   Here are your reading assignments for the day:

Extenuating Circumstances policy & Covid

Most recent update to the policy

What to do if host or guest tests positive for Covid

The good news is that if the guest tests positive for Covid at any point within 14 days before check-in, they are required to contact Airbnb to cancel, and their account will be suspended until they can supply proof of recovery. You as a host don't have to cancel the booking and you won't be penalized.

The bad news is that your cancellation policy won't apply due to the extenuating circumstances, so you won't get paid for the booking.

Thank you for your help! That was very useful. I'd hoped there was a section I'd missed. Contacting Airbnb via 'law enforcement agencies' is definitely not something possible here. I think I was hoping to see: 'if your guest has tested positive, tick this box and scan their document, and we will book them into the nearest quarantine hotel for you'! I know it was too optimistic to hope to avoid all the phone calls 🙂
