I would like to make a suggestion. I am a Superhost. At Airbnb, you have an ENORMOUS platform that can be used to make a difference on our Planet. I would like to suggest that you ADD A CATEGORY TO OUR ABILITY TO REVIEW GUESTS. That category would be called something related to environmental consideration by Guests; perhaps the title of "Environment Friendly" or "Environment Considerate" would work. The behavior that would be evaluated (1 - 5 stars) would be if Guests separated and recycled their trash, conserved water, turned off systems such as lights, A/C and heat when they were not in use, and/or when they departed the property. My rental is in California. We are in an extreme drought. We provide containers for our Guests to separate their waste (foodstuffs, recyclables, trash), and we are solar. Some Guests are very considerate of these issues, and many are not, as they leave the unit with every single light left on, don't separate their trash, and even leave faucets dripping. It seems to me that you have an important opportunity to help the Planet, and I sincerely hope that you will consider utilizing it in this effective way! (Travelers could also be asked to evaluate Hosts on this issue as well!) Thank you for the consideration given to this critical point. Sincerely, Joan Finkle, Superhost, Kenwood, CA
@Joan2532 One category that already exists for rating is "Observance of House Rules." So as long as your rules include the environmental considerations you expect guests to observe, your proposed rating category would be redundant.
@Joan2532 As none of the guest ratings are visible to hosts who don't use Instant Book, we only have the written reviews to go on. As a host who lives in the countryside, on a private septic, with a somewhat limited water supply, and no curbside garbage or recycling pick-up, I appreciate my guests who are environmentallyy conscious. Which I have to say, most of them have been, because that seems to be the type of people who are attracted to my listing.
Even if it isn't a house rule, but simply an ask, and guests ignore it, you can say in your written review something like, "It would have been appreciated if these guests had complied with the simple recycling instructions, instead requiring me to paw through their garbage, which could easily have been placed in the clearly marked containers, rather than everything they used put in the garbage bin."
@Sarah977 I've found most guests to be quite considerate about separating their rubbish, but then on the other hand they've usually arrived here on short-haul flights. I'm glad we aren't asked to judge people on their ecological virtue here, because that detail seems a tiny bit weightier than forgetting to turn off a light.
