I distinctly remember the nerves I had before hosting my first guest in November 2016. We had spent many months getting our dreamy little cabin in the woods just right. The plan was simple and adorably naive: Rent it out sometimes, offset a few costs, cover insurance or sneak in a small renovation project here and there.
Little did we know, this would turn into a real business. Back then, there weren’t endless resources, like Facebook groups, webinars, or how-to guides. Hosting felt a bit like the Wild West. I didn’t know any other hosts. Every decision was based purely on instinct, including pricing, policies, and communication with guests.
It was a little terrifying, but also exhilarating. Then our county introduced new regulations requiring a local contact who could be physically present within 30 minutes if something went wrong.
That’s how I met my first host friend. We talked for hours about hosting. We discussed the best way to make a bed, the ideal cancellation policy, what items to stock, and what actually mattered to guests. We shared resources and slowly built a rhythm.
Before that, I had always thought of hosting as one of the loneliest businesses out there. I wasn’t wrong, but I was just missing the right people.
About five years later, Airbnb asked if I’d be interested in becoming a volunteer community leader and starting a Host Club in Sonoma County. After an interview process, I was introduced to my co-leader.
From our very first call, we clicked. We wanted to create a community where hosts could share ideas, talk about local issues, ask questions, and, most importantly, feel supported. The process was slow. But little by little, hosts began to join. Some jumped right in, commenting and sharing online. Others quietly observed from the sidelines.
Then we began to meet in person. I’ll never forget one of our first gatherings, a fall evening when I served homemade lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and wine to 40 or 50 hosts. We ate, laughed, and swapped stories late into the night.
After that night, I never felt alone in hosting. The town and area where we hosted also started to feel like home.
Being a community leader led me to one of the greatest honors of my hosting life. I was nominated and accepted for a seat on the 2026 Airbnb Host Advisory Board, where I get to partner with Airbnb and offer my thoughts on hosting. I’m honored to serve alongside 22 other board members from 17 countries.
So, here’s my advice: Find your people. Join your local Host Club if you have one or the global community. If you don’t, this might be your sign to start one. It’s easy to join. Head to your hosting dashboard, click the three-line menu, go to hosting resources, and your local club should pop right up.
Hosting isn’t just about listings, pricing, and 5-star reviews. It’s about community, and having a place to share the wins, challenges, funny moments, and tough moments.
Over the years, I’ve built real friendships through my Host Club and global host community—and I’ve learned more about hosting, local resources, Airbnb, and other people that I could have on my own. It has truly changed my life.
Thank you @Nathan146 It truly is a wonderful journey we’re sharing. Moving from hosts to colleagues, and then to friends, happens so naturally when you share the same passions and interests. These are the connections that enrich our lives and help us become better hosts every single day. Thank you for being part of this journey!
I love this piece @Nathan146 - I think it typifies the journey for many of us and I know that’s I knew when I started back in 2012 what I know today - rather than just blindly going into this industry - it would have been even scarier!
Thank you for sharing, Nathan, while I read it, I start to compare yours with my journey too, we have some similar feelings/emotions about hosting. I love it, especially the last two closing paragraphs.
I get that sense too Ayu. I think we have a lot of common feelings. Can't wait to meet you in September!
@Nathan146 thank you for sharing your story of the beginning of your Hosting days.

Oh @Nathan146,
While reading your article, I could truly sense your appreciation for your guests and also for this wonderful business we are in--and the rewards of livelihood and experience it brings to you personally.
I'm so grateful you found me earlier this year and invited me to join you and your 300+ members in the private San Francisco North Bay & Redwood Coast Host Club. It's been a real pleasure to see you (and co-host Melodie) at the recent host gatherings. These get togethers help me to feel like I've not been working in a vacuum all alone since 2014 while building my high-end Airbnb management service here in Marin County (sometimes white knuckle-ing it by the seat of my pants!)
You are the best. Please know how much I appreciate you.
Warmly,
Adrienne, ConciergeMarin
PS Will I see you at HQ for Host Week in September?
Hello Nathan
Your story perfectly reflects what so many of us have experienced as hosts. In the beginning, it often feels like a lonely journey, making decisions based on instinct and learning through trial and error. But over time, you realize that the greatest value isn’t just in the bookings or the 5-star reviews—it’s in the people you meet along the way.
I couldn’t agree more: being part of a community makes all the difference. Sharing experiences, learning from fellow hosts, and knowing there’s always someone willing to help makes this journey so much more rewarding and enjoyable.
Congratulations on everything you’ve achieved, especially your appointment to the 2026 Airbnb Host Advisory Board. It’s a well-deserved recognition and an inspiration to all of us who continue to grow as hosts.
Thank you for reminding us that hosting is about so much more than listings, pricing, and reviews. It’s about building meaningful connections, supporting one another, and creating a community where everyone can learn and thrive together.

I first connected with “my people” through the guests who stayed in the rooms of my home and shared breakfast with me each morning, a true Airbnb bed-and-breakfast experience.
But like you, I didn’t know any other hosts when my city contacted me and told me to stop hosting. So I “cold called” six other hosts through the Airbnb platform (which earned me a friendly “please don’t do that” email from Airbnb!). From those conversations, we built an alliance.
Now look at what we have: Host Clubs, a vibrant global hosting community, the Host Advisory Board, and so much more.
Whether you’re a host or a co-host, there’s a place for you. All Airbnb hosts and co-hosts are welcome in Host Clubs.
Find yours and join the community!
Thanks for an awesome share Nathan!
What a beautiful story!! Thank you for sharing! I'm so glad I get to support this community with you.
