Hey everyone!
Being a creative soul, I want to bring back one of my favourite topics I've seen here on the Community Center because it was such a hit last time and honestly, who doesn't love a bit of creative inspiration?
Have you ever made something special for your listing?
Maybe you painted a mural, built a coffee table, sewed some curtains, or crafted a welcome sign… No matter how big or small, I want to see and hear all about it! Plus, it’s always fun to peek behind the scenes at the unique touches that make each Airbnb so special.
📸 Share your creativity!
Drop a photo of your handmade masterpiece (or masterpieces!) in the comments.
Tell us the story behind it; what inspired you, how it turned out, and how guests have reacted.
Whether it’s a Pinterest success or a “nailed it!” fail, I want to see it all!
@Nanette68 I love macrame! I would love to have a HUGE one behind my sofa. Would you like to share a picture of your wall hangings?
I think textile art can really soften a space. I like to do punch needling (although I haven't for a while). But here's some pieces that I created.
Really looking forward to seeing your macrame! 🤞
your needlepoint is beautiful! Thank you for sharing
Oh my goodness @Nanette68 - MACRAME GOALS!!! Thank you so much for sharing! 😍
I love these! And also I love the door way too - what a beautiful shape. Do you think you'll make more?
Our Airbnb is an old river cabin built in the 1930s. I tore down some hideous plaid wallpaper in the bathroom and replaced it with various vintage and current USGS maps of the region (and snuck two in from elsewhere where we got engage and another where we got married). Really happy with how it turned out, and guests love it.
Main Bathroom
How ingenious! That is such a fantastic idea. Maps are beautiful in their own way aren't they? I love how you've made them personal to you too - it's telling a story!
How do you protect it from the water in the bathroom? Has it stood the test of time?
Great question @Rebecca
I used mod podge to decoupage the maps on the wall, and then sprayed 4 coats of their branded acrylic sealant afterward. So.... ask me in a few years how it's holding up! Nice thing is, I think it'll be easy to fix/replace maps.
I also lined the drawers of the built-ins with pages from old books using the same method as a little "surprise" to guests (don't tell any librarians).
4 coats of sealant is a lot so I think they'll definitely be up there for a while yet!
I love that idea and will not be sharing with any book lovers. It's amazing what you can do with a little imagination. Do you have any other projects on the go?
I'm really loving all the ideas on this thread! 😍
I made a bench and table/bench out of skids from local lumber yard. That means the wood is free, and bonus weathered.
I recommend only using gorilla glue where wood touch’s wood, and nails. More than strong enough. Use your imagination to make structure solid, a sander to smooth it down. And outdoor stain. Like weather guard,
this stile is great for indoor as well, for indoor sand as much as possible, clear coat varithane or to your taste.
time to go skid hunting.
enjoy
Hello @Holland6 👋
These are really lovely and even better - FREE!
The wood is just old skids, or pallets,
you have to take them apart, for the wood. The skids the lumber yard are throwing out, garbage.
yes outside, that is weather guard stain. Once over sanding.
for inside, lots, and lots, and lots, of sanding, after that ,,,I suggest a clear coat.
@Rebecca Sure, ,,,nails,,,,,but for the most part, it’s best to go with the pieces of easily saved wood,,,less of a. Chore,,,and, I just realized that I have to upgrade my sander, the expensive ones, it’s a mistake using the cheapest sander ,,,sanding takes a long time for nice pieces, but it should not be laborious, more like exercise. With cheap sander, you do the work, with expensive ones ,,,they do the work.
I use jig saw, to cut up the rest, and burn it in fire pit,
im a blue moon chatter, so forgive if sometimes there is no reply.
this was done with cheap sander took forever, gorilla glue and nails,
but when you sand and round all the corners, till it looks like one peace of wood.,,,
Good advise from high end wood worked, said to me,,,make it look like it grew there.
beautiful ,,
And if you don’t already know, when you clear coat or whatever varithane you use, don’t be afraid to sand ,,with very fine sand paper the little dust bumps.
and then varithane a second coat, if there is still dust bumps, lightly sand age, ,,and do another coat, if still bumps, sand again,,,,till smooth,
then it’s like glass.✅ 👀
Oh,, don’t use sander, on finishing touches.
rap fine piece of sandpaper around sponge, or large dish towel.
