Life Between Guests: A Short-Term Rental Comedy

It all started with one apartment. I thought, "How hard can it be? List it online, hand over the keys—boom, money flows in!" Spoiler: It doesn’t.

By the sixth apartment, I realized that cleaning isn’t just a simple wipe-down—it’s a full-body workout with yoga elements🤸: toilet squats, vacuum lunges, and balancing acts with bed sheets on my head. That’s when I hired my first cleaner. Now, we have a whole team—cleaners🧚‍, a courier🚚, a handyman🙋, a dry-cleaning service… We’re basically the Special Forces of Cleanliness!🦸‍

People think running an Airbnb business is glamorous🎀. “Wow, you have so many apartments! Must be like Monopoly, right?” Yeah, except in Monopoly, no one calls you at midnight because they can’t find the light switch.😉

Managing over 20 apartments is like having 20 children. Some are well-behaved, always clean, smell nice. Others? Constantly breaking things, needing attention, and somehow costing me more than they make.🙄

And the guests? Oh, they keep life interesting!

Some treat the apartment like a sacred temple—shoes off, dishes washed, even the pillows fluffed before leaving.❤️❤️❤️

Others? They turn the place into an escape room challenge—where are all the spoons? Why is the couch in the hallway? And why is there a single sock in the fridge?😤

One guest once told me, "I can’t find the bathroom." 🫣It was right there. Not hidden. Not camouflaged. Just… a door. But hey, at least they asked before using the plant.

Guest interactions? That’s a whole adventure. They come in three types:

1. The Perfect Ones 😍– They love everything, leave, and give 5 stars. Rare, but real!

2. The Questioners 🙃– Call at 2 AM: "Excuse me, how do I turn on the moon? It’s dark outside!"

3. The Indestructible Ones😶🌫– They can break a toilet by looking at it👀, set a microwave on fire with a croissant🥐, and complain that "the bed is too horizontal."

Then there’s the reviews game. I can provide hotel-quality sheets, a perfectly cleaned space, a personal welcome message… and still get 4 stars because “the weather was bad.” Oh, I’m sorry—I’ll call Mother Nature and let her know.

But despite the madness, I love it❤️. I transform spaces, create experiences, and build a business that runs like a (mostly) well-oiled machine. And if all else fails—at least I have enough crazy stories to last a lifetime!

***I hope your life is as interesting as mine, and I’d love to hear your stories too. Also, I hope I managed to make you smile a little!😉😁

Hello @Oksana127 ,

Thank you!

This post really highlights the challenges of hosting and the wide variety of people we encounter- many of whom we would have never met under other circumstances.

I would also add another type of guest to the list: the “play dumb” type - “Oh, do I really need to pay for the extra guest?”

I think that once you understand the dynamic between all the moving parts of hosting, it becomes quite enjoyable. And let me tell you, since becoming a host, I never have boring dinners anymore! Even when no one has anything to say, I can always pull a funny hosting story from memory to liven up the conversation.

best,
