Hi everyone. I’m getting ready to host my first guests and I’d love some real-world advice from experienced hosts. I’m focused on making the place comfortable and memorable without overdoing it, so I’m curious about what small touches actually make a big difference (welcome notes, snacks, local tips, cleaning routines, etc.), how you handle check-in smoothly, and any mistakes you wish you hadn’t made early on. Also interested in practical advice on setting clear house rules that guests respect and handling minor issues like late arrivals or noisy neighbors.

Hi Jennifer , being a new host myself, I would advise you for a first arrival, a personalized welcome when handing over the keys, a tour of the premises and as a welcome, a snack such as cookies, water, soda and at the end show them your complete availability.👋Good first

I like the idea of adding small touches like cookies and water too, it feels warm and genuine. Making myself available without hovering is a nice balance. @Jennifer5404 that's exciting.. your first few guests will really set the tone for your listing, so treat them like VIPs. Focus on stellar customer service and do everything you can to earn great reviews early on.. they'll give your listing credibility and momentum.
Little 'surprise and delight' touches go a long way.. things like local snacks, or a short list of nearby restaurants or attractions you personally recommend. Keep communication warm and prompt, make check-in foolproof, and respond quickly to any small issue that comes up. Guests will remember how you made them feel, and those early reviews will shape how new guests see your place going forward.

I write a welcome note that is customized why they are coming to our town. I have a guidebook where I recommend places to eat and visit in town. Our home is decorated as if we live there full time. The kitchen is stocked with any type of cooking tools and dishes one could need. I get so many compliments that I provide aluminum foil and cooking gloves.

Congrats on getting ready to host your first guests! that’s exciting! From my 8+ years of hosting experience, the biggest key to smooth operations is setting up self check-in early on. A lockbox or smart keypad makes it effortless for both you and your guests, no waiting around or coordinating arrivals.
For house rules, I always recommend setting clear boundaries upfront:
• Absolutely no parties or events
• Quiet hours after 10 PM
• Minimum 2-night stay (this alone filters out most party groups)
You’d be surprised how much smoother your hosting experience becomes once those systems are in place.
