How do you know if you're profitable?

How do you know if you're profitable?

Hi everyone,

I'm both an Airbnb host and a software engineer. One thing I've been struggling with is understanding the true profitability of a short-term rental beyond a simple spreadsheet. Between per-booking costs, monthly expenses, annual costs, furniture and equipment replacement, and other irregular expenses, I often feel that the real picture is harder to see than it should be.

I'm considering building a tool specifically for short-term rental hosts to help with this. Before investing time into it, I'd like to understand whether this is a problem others experience as well.

How do you currently track profitability for your properties? Do spreadsheets work well enough, or are there things you wish were easier to measure and analyze?

If anyone is open to sharing their experience, I'd be happy to chat privately as well.

Thanks!
