I have reached out to Airbnb several times with no luck. They are not charging a local 6% Transient Guest Tax for our City. I can't get anyone to respond and my messages get closed when I reach out. Help!
Hi @Melissa3004,
Could you share where you are located? That will help me tag hosts near you to assist with your local taxes.
Ottawa, Kansas.
Hi @Melissa3004!
Tagging hosts from Ottawa so they can help with these doubts related to taxes: @Cyrus58, @Nabin6 and @Salaam0, have you ever had this issue?
Airbnb does not automatically collect/pay local taxes in many locations and clearly discloses that. This is because they must have an agreement with that local taxing agency to do so and there are many that do not have an agreement with Airbnb.
In some locations, Airbnb allows hosts to add a custom tax that is added to the reservation and then paid to the Host. The Host in turn then pays the local tax authority. If you don't have the Custom Tax option appearing on the listing, then it is up to the Host to either collect the tax manually from every guest via the resolution center, or pay the tax out of pocket. If you collect it from every guest, then you must disclose that on the listing (usually in the property info or other details). Then you message the guest about the local tax, that Airbnb doesn't collect that and you will have to collect it from them manually. A pain.
