Question about collecting GST/HST in Canada

Hello folks,

According to https://www.airbnb.ca/help/article/3198/why-airbnb-is-requesting-your-canadian-gst-info

I have a question. Before we provide our tax information, Airbnb will collect the tax from our guests. They will see a tax calculated when they try to book.

So what will happen after we provide our tax information? Guest will not be charged for extra GST?  So it's the host's responsibility to include the GST in the nightly price, am I right?

Thanks and have a good day!

I am not clear on this myself.  I asked AirBnB for a breakdown of the taxes they charge the guests and they clearly are charging HST on the total.  My problem is that they are charging HST but I am not going to make more than 30K so I don't have to charge HST, so that money collected on my behalf should come back to me.  The government has no right to it and neither does AirBnB but how do I get this money back?

Hi @Nikkita3 , I am wondering the same thing. When I look at your listing I can see the taxes being charged on top of your nightly price - just wondering how you were able to do this? When a guest books do you paid out for the total (nightly price + taxes)?

Thanks,

Barbara
