I have been hosting for over 7 years, 4.97 rating with almost 200 reviews. Has anyone else seen a serge in 4 star reviews recently? They are all over the most petty issues or better yet no issues at all. In 7 years I have never had this happen. There are no changes in my property, I have actually added more amenities, and I keep getting 4 stars. Every time a get a review my heart stops. It is getting so discouraging! People have no idea how much this can hurt you!
Hi Denise,
Funnily enough I have seen the same thing all the way over in Australia! We might have 5 stars in all but 1 category and a 4 in one category but then overall they put a 4 star. Not just that, I have had a surge in guests who have no common sense. Unsure how to use microwaves, stoves, tv remotes... I often want to reply, if you don't know how to use it, maybe you shouldn't. Obviously I know not to do this, but it's just good to vent to be honest!!!!
Glad I'm not alone!!! Just when you think you have seen it all you get surprised again!!
It can get so discouraging when you put your heart and soul in this business.
I totally get how frustrating that must be! It’s tough when you put in so much effort and still get ratings that don’t reflect the experience you provide.
Have you noticed any patterns—like certain types of guests or booking sources? Maybe a quick follow-up message after checkout, asking if everything was perfect, could help catch minor concerns before they turn into 4-star reviews.
You're clearly doing an amazing job with almost 200 reviews at 4.97—keep going!
A four star review is not a good review, and I don't understand how 5 stars in all other categories and one 4 star translates into an overall 4 stars... my math is not so great!
My pet peeve is the location category. I'm a super host with almost all five star reviews except for the occasional 4 stars on either location, which I can't do anything about, or value. I have tons of photos, if you think it's not a good value, don't book! And Denise, you are right about " just when you think you've seen it all". My place is for one person, the solo traveler. A recent potential guest thought that what I meant by one guest is that he, the booking guest, could also have his guest!
But I am lucky to have really terrific guests 99 per cent of the time.
Same here in Chicago. We even took over the cleaning ourselves because we want to improve our listing. However for some reason 3, 4 star has been given. Lately I had a guest complained about "little food/condiments" and left a 3 star. I requested it to be removed since it is irrelevant (of course no food is provided in our listing), but Airbnb refused to remove it. so whatever guest wants but not on the listing is okay now? Guest are wanting more and more and more....It is frustrating that guest start being encouraged to be greedy and revenging. Host rating and reputation is held hostage by the guest for sure.
