Being part of a low impact community, we have certain ethical standards. Unfortunately, AirBnB have lower standards, such as allowing illegal Israeli occupiers in the West Bank to make money from their illegally held property on the AirBnB platform. They have refused to engage with me on this issue and therefore I have suspended my listing until it is resolved and also listed my property elsewhere.
I would urge hosts with a conscience to do likewise.
A very succinct expression of your personal ethics. Well done!
If you do a search via Google you will see that Airbnb did ban those in the illegally occupied territories in Israel from hosting @Andy4374
Unfortunately an Israeli backed lobby in the US took Airbnb to court to force them to accept hosts in the illegally occupied territories.
That’s a close approximation to what actually happened. AirBnB had subsequently been sued in a class action (on behalf of the delisted property owners) by a law firm in Jerusalem, with the backing of the Israeli government. The essence of the case was that it accused AirBnB of “grave and outrageous” discrimination against Israelis because it still lists homes in some other geopolitical hotspots, such as Tibet and Northern Cyprus.
From what I understand AirBnB just crumbled and took the easy way out without it ever going to a courtroom. The Tibet and Cyprus comparisons are spurious.
Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine picked AirBnB in particular for profiting from the illegal occupation. It is indefensible. Google her report.
@Andy4374 . Andy, thank you for your heartfelt words. This issue has been discussed on Host Circle previously.
As a host I have always offered my potential guests a choice of who they wish to book through. I note bookings have picked up in the other platform lately so perhaps its good to allow that choice and yes, my conscience is clear.
