partial stay

Hi

Guests had to leave on day 5 for a week long stay for a family emergency. Taking into account the weekly discount, what would be a fair refund?

@Timothy319

What i useally do is shorten the reservation ("change option") to the day of departure.

Then the normal price for the actual stay is calculated. You can also change that price manually, if desired by adding some money as a "cancellation fee" (in the same change form).

If reservation can not be changed anymore (too late) or even has finished

, you can use the resolution centre to provide a similar refund

Best regards,

@Timothy319 Fairness is in the eye of the beholder. Have your guests asked for a refund? If not, perhaps they think it’s fair you keep the money for the reservation. It’s probably the last thing on their mind right now. Likewise, what do you think is fair? Personally I would send my sympathies but not offer any refund unless they requested it. Then I would do as you suggest and subtract the weekly discount from the remainder of the reservation which may only be 1 or 2 nights depending on what time of day they left. During a time of family emergency the guests emotions may be high and an explanation of how you got to the amount of the refund too complex to think about. That is why ultimately I would just rather not instigate a partial refund, but opt to sending a sympathetic message.

@Timothy319  You should be aware that some guests will book a place for a week to take advantage of a weekly discount, but then come up with an excuse why they need to leave earlier, when that was their plan all along. So if a guest demands a refund for unstayed days in that case, they could just be scamming. If they don't mention a refund, then of course they would be telling the truth and if a host feels a refund is something they want to offer, that's  a nice gesture.

And if you haven't gotten paid out from Airbnb for the booking, don't issue any refunds until you receive the $, as a guest could ask Airbnb for a refund, receive it, and the host is out that money twice.

@Timothy319 You could happily answer that no refund is due as they have effectively stopped you from taking bookings for those days.
