Proposed ordinance to essentially ban vacation rentals in Los Angeles

Just got this email from Airbnb. I wanted to let people know that even if you can't be there in person, you can send them a letter to read at the meeting.

On Thursday, December 19, at 7:00am, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission will be considering a restrictive ordinance that will essentially ban vacation rentals in Los Angeles.

If passed, the ordinance will:

  • Only allow 1 vacation rental per person or entity
  • Limit operation of a vacation rental to 30 days max per year
  • Require hosts to verify they occupy the listing on an occasional basis
  • Severely restrict the total number of vacation rentals permitted in each neighborhood

You say @Pete69 that your local government plans to:-

"Limit operation of a vacation rental to 30 days max per year"

However that's not actually true is it????

According to your city government and Airbnb

https://www.airbnb.co.uk/help/article/864/los-angeles-ca

Anyone with an eligible STR property can host for up to 120 days NOT 30 days max as you state.

You can also apply for a licence to host for 120 days plus.

Personally and as someone who has STRs in major cities I agree that STRs should be restricted to one per person. I have no issues with the total numbers of STRs being restricted, nor would I have an issue showing I lived on a premises.

As those who profit from running STR business we need to acknowledge the impact they have had on the private rented market and house prices, on the ability of key workers to live in a city and of course on the social fabric of our cities. We need to acknowledge that some restrictions need to be brought in order to balance the needs of those who want to run a business running STRs and the wider communities in which they are located.

This is a NEW LA City proposal. Cities, like mine, that fall under LA City are subject to this thing if it passes.

Then it sounds like you need to ask Airbnb to update their information as this isn't what they say on their website @Pete69

I just got the above email today from Airbnb. It doesn't speak of this ordinance on the site because it has not gone into effect. They are considering it.
