Hi all,
I am looking for a long term rental in switzerland. I found a nice place but instructions the host sent me via email seem little bit strange to me. Does airbnb provide this kind of service? Or is it a scam? What do you think? Thanks in advance!
----email from host below----
This same thing happened to me recently. The apartment was on apartments.com, but he said he used AirBnB for the transaction process. I was sent this exact same email and was skeptical about some of the steps because some things did not add up. I wasn't skeptical about it until I showed one of my friends the email and he mentioned a few red flags. The fact that I had to deposit the money before seeing the place and the Google search passport template was enough for me to call it quits. Although, the name it was under for me was Chris Meisner. So glad you didn't send anything though!
@Logan118 Not being able to view the place beforehand isn't the sign of a scam. When you make a real booking on Airbnb, you are charged by Airbnb when you book. There are very few legitimate hosts who allow pre-viewing, as it's a security risk to let random strangers without a confirmed booking into a home.
Hosts try to give accurate descriptions of their places, have photo galleries and reviews from past guests for you to read, and you can always use the Inquiry option to ask questions before committing to a booking.
The signs of a scam is that a real Airbnb host might advertise on another site just to get more exposure, but rather than exchange lengthy emails with potential guests, they would just give you the link to their listing and you would take it from there. The host doesn't ask you for the payment, nor arrange the booking.
And you never send money for an Airbnb- Airbnb charges the credit card you have on file with them automatically when you book, and retains the money until 24 hours after the guest checks in.
Also, long term lease rentals are not common on Airbnb, because the platform is really set up for short term bookings. Real landlords usually want references, security deposits, work history and employment info, leases, etc. to rent out long term.
Glad you avoided getting scammed.
It's November 2021 and I've also gotten this !!!! -_- Looking for a 1 bedroom in Boston 😞
Mine is from "Chris L" behringer @ kbe-building .com
Its the same scam people use online for selling fake cars, computers, etc. "I'm out of town" or "I'll send and you can put the money in escrow" or . . . . Airbnb should have a special hotline for people to report the ones pretending to work with Airbnb.
Just to update people, in case someone is looking for this information to see if it is a scam.
A Chicago listing on 710 W Wellington Ave is being offered by a "Chris L. Althaus."
I'm stringing the **bleep** along to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. But it smelled like a fishy deal and I had to know what it is they do. So far he sent his "passport" and is making sure I have $1600 ready to transfer through a guaranteed payment system on Airbnb.
The best way to know if an inquiry will lead down a rabbit hole of this sort is if it sounds $300-1000 underprice, is in a nice area of town, offers only an email prompt to make contact. Another way to double check is to download the images and reverse search them on TinyEye or something. This listing led to VRBO and Airbnb locations in Boston.
Stay safe.
why is he sending you his "passport"/how did you get him to??
@Priya164 It's what these scammers do. They send their victims copies of their passport (which isn't their passport- it's fake or stolen) to try to instill confidence that they are trustworthy.
@David7964 "So far he sent his "passport" and is making sure I have $1600 ready to transfer through a guaranteed payment system on Airbnb."
That's your big scam clue right there. Airbnb hosts don't send guests copies of their passport, nor do guests "transfer" money to hosts. When a guest books a place on Airbnb, Airbnb charges the credit card the guest has on file with them. The host is not involved in that process at all.
