I have only been on airbnb for a short while and, other than the 2 guest i've hosted, i find that people request, I reply, and then i never hear back from them. Is this common?
Hi @Bruce278
I believe this is really quite common.
I have IB but I still get quite a few enquiries.
I usually reply within 5 mins - I've been hosting 9 months and none of the enquriries have become bookings.
A lot of people mgiht message 10 or 12 properties asking nearly the same things - they are doing a sweep.
There are other more experienced hosts out there who may be able to offer more insights.
One thing I have learned is NOT to block off the calendar in these instances - if they want to go ahead and book, the calendar becomes blocked at that point, until then, first come, best dressed.
Cheers
Thank you, we only blocked once taking a lot of time trying to accomadate someone with a pet, telling her i would work something out for her for sure. we went back and forth for a few hours with my doing back flips for her and then when we got our second property tenants to agree to take the pet for a one month trial, she didn't book it, and never gave the courtesy of a reply. luckily I got someone else that same night. won't do that again.
sorry i hadn't replied in a more timely manor. first we were unsure how this all worked, 2nd we are not on the internet all of the time and notifications don't go to our phones. truly sincerely did not intend to upset or be disrespectful. thanks again for your comment.
@Bruce278 Yes, unfortunately, basic manners seem to be going the way of the Dodo. You take the time to reply and answer their questions, and they can't even be bothered to spend 1 minute thanking you for your time and response.
sad isn't it! it is the same one our other booking sites. the good thing is that we do end up with good guests 99% of the time.

Hi @Bruce278
Not sure who you are apologising to, but pretty certain no one was remotely upset with you! Just a heads up though - when using these boards you need to use the "@" symbol and then the name of the person you are talking to, if you want to reply to a specific person or group of people. Then they will get an alert that there is a message there for them. Other wise it may bery easily not be noticed. As the original creator of this thread, airbnb will give you an alert every time someone replies or adds to it, but this doesn't happen for everyone else who has commented on this thread - hence the need to use the @specific name. (The community board functions aren't very well explained)
Cheers

hi @Sarah977 , just received some help from someone telling me about adding the @ to replies. not sure if you received my two replies to you, because I hadn't used it. all is good. basically was just a thanks for your reply
@Bruce278 Yes, I had to be advised by fellow posters here how to use the @ symbol as well when I first started checking in on the forum. It's not like that's explained anywhere at the top of the forum pages (not sure why- seems like it should be). I had seen your replies, but I'm on holiday right now, so not too active here in the last week or so.
