Charged more than was listed

Hello,  I just requested a booking where the listing showed $1174 initially, but when I clicked through, I was eventually charged $1244.92 at checkout when you add the two payments.  Could you explain this discrepancy?  I selected the option to "Now you’ll see one price for your trip, all fees included."

Thanks!

Hi @Bryce175

On the page where it shows the 2 payments, you can click "show details" to help us understand it better.

Hi @Shelley159 , here are the only details shown: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PAxfwHw95JPQwZSd6

Hi @Bryce175

Ah, yes, not very useful! I've looked at a past booking and I can see a lot of detail when I click "Get Receipts".

Once clicked, it opens the two payments. Each one of them is clickable again (click on the amount) - there it lists the line items in more detail.

If you can see more detailed line items there, you're welcome to post it as it may help us. One of the other hosts in the community center was asking about a similar issue recently (also two payments), but in that case we didn't have the guest's view to analyse it beyond just the two amounts.

In your case I suspect some of it may have to do with the currency fee (see below), because it looks like you're booking in a different country from where you live.

However, your price shows a full 6% increase (not just around 2 or 3%), so let's see if we can find more detail in "Get Receipts".

Here's the currency fee story so long:

Most guest service fees are under 14.2% of the booking subtotal (the booking subtotal includes the nightly price and any additional fees charged by the host, but excludes the guest service fee and taxes). The guest service fee varies based on a variety of factors and may be higher or lower depending on the booking. The guest service fee is reduced for some stays of 28 nights or more.

For bookings where the guest pays using a different currency from the one set by the host for their listing, we adjust our fees to align with the value we provide our guests. For these cross-currency bookings, the guest service fee will include an additional amount, resulting in a guest service fee of up to 16.5% of the booking subtotal.

Thanks so much for the detail.  Here are the details I can see (the smaller ~$75 charge has no additional details, just looks like a remaining balance that is due later):

Hi @Bryce175

It looks like the Airbnb service fee includes a currency fee of around 3% (based on the difference between the discounts given for the monthly rate and the service fee). The detail shows this was already included in the 1174 monthly rate quoted. When I expand the monthly fee from 30 nights to 33 as @Chad548 says and deduct the bank payment savings, I get a slightly higher total (sorry, as usual I can't get to the exact total, maybe someone else can work it out precisely!).

At least it looks like you're not overpaying.

Ok, thanks for looking into this.  Weird, just now when I play around with # of days when browsing a different property (29/30/31/32/etc.), the "monthly" price will update automatically.  Unfortunately it did not in my case, but I appreciate you looking into this.

Hi Bryce so the simple answer is it looks like you are staying longer than a month.  Your first screen says $1,174 for a month 30 days typically and you are staying for 33 days it looks like. So that is why the additional 2nd payment of the $75.

So you are paying about $70 for the additional 3 days.

Hope that helps.

Hey Chad, I understand there may be some funkiness with staying exactly 30 days or "monthly" and receiving a discount for that block of time, then Airbnb charging more for additional days, but in this case, the screenshot I took before booking was from May 26th to June 28th, and the eventual reservation I paid for was for the exact same dates.  And just now, when I select some random property and I play with the dates prior to booking, that "monthly" figure changes on the fly.  So I'm still left with confusion why my eventual booking was more than the real time price while browsing.  I made the booking anyway because my wife liked the place and we were fearful we would miss out, but I'm still hopeful to have Airbnb honor the original price.  Thanks for the help!

Completely understand what you are saying and I know this isn't the answer you want to hear, but Airbnb isn't charging you incorrectly.

They committed to charging you $1,174 for a month - 31-days. They in fact on the breakdown only charged you $1,169.47.

You and Airbnb were just talking different units of measurements.  You said hey we want to stay for 33 days. Airbnb said here is the price for a month, then we will give you the price for the extra 2 days.

By selecting all fees included, just means the price they show you for a unit of measurement which for Airbnb the max is 31 days, as they charge at the very least in monthly increments. They gave you a price for that unit of measurement (31 days), all fees included.  Not the $1,061.40 they show, plus taxes and fees to get you to the $1,169.47.

The selected prices include all fees doesn't mean it covers your entire stay, especially if it is over 30 days.  Let's say there is a $90 cleaning fee. That is $90 for a single day, $3 a day for a month and if you stayed 3 months about $1 a day.  Some listings have resort or parking fees that are daily thing and not a once per stay thing.

So bottom lining this, Airbnb clearly gave you a price for a month, and you are trying to say your month is 33 days.  We all know there isn't a month with 33 days.  Airbnb is charging you $37.72 a day for the first 31 days, plus for the 2 extra days.

The math comes out to $75.449677 for the 2 extra days so they rounded up.

Sorry I am usually pretty sympathetic with folks with issues with Airbnb, but my vote on this one would go with Airbnb as I think it was just an oversight on the unit of measurement they were giving you.
